Pierre on 2023:
“23 – yes very happy we had nearly full tanks – there was some time with rain that got us through the year so all good. I made my volume in 22 too – but we have good terroirs here with plenty of soil depth so it wasn’t too dry for us. We had quite an easy time in the cuverie too. The wines that we are selling were bottled from the springtime – because we still had some stock and the prices were good we sold our crus to the négociants in 22 – for the moment the 23s are still in our tanks – let’s see!”
Pierre on 2022:
“Me, personally, I’m very happy; it was very hot but it was also a very clean vintage – we had no frost and no hail and the advantage of Theize is that it remains cool – so we didn’t have vines that were in too dry soil. If I could sign up for the next 15 years to do the same, I would. I’m looking for quality rather than quantity and I almost had both in 2022 – the gamay was a little down vs what’s allowed but not the chardonnay.”
The wines…
A good range of delicious wines – as last year!
2022 Beaujolais Cuvée l’Authentique
A lovely fresh invitation – generously fruity. In the mouth, we have volume and tons of juicy flavour – dark-fruited with a small frame of tannin – finishing very well – delicious wine.
60-70-year-old vines – have the right to use this label or Beaujolais – but to make a more interesting range they have chosen this. Some barrel elevage here too – 6 months.
More width and perhaps more aromatic concentration too – perfumed and floral. Mouth-filling and more fresh and fluid than the previous wine – Ooh that’s simply excellent – indeed for the label that’s a great wine – and it’s only very long into the finish that a hint of barrel becomes visible – in 6 months more you possibly won’t have that. Bravo – under €10 from the domaine!
2021(!) Côte de Brouilly
Chardignon – near the cemetery! Bluestone soils here and no barrel elevage.
An airy fresh nose. In the mouth, this has volume and energy and nothing green to destabilise the flavours. Long too. This is really a baby – and such a fine baby for the vintage.
2020(!) Moulin à Vent
From the climat En Brennay, in the domaine since 2011.
Wow, that’s deep and concentrated – a generously fruited nose. Large scale in the mouth – of course, it’s very ripe – but it’s not over-ripe – ‘I’d rather harvest a bit early – maybe 13-13.5° than have something heavy.’ That’s a very good wine, indeed impressive, wine.
2017 Côte de Brouilly
From magnum!
Complex, maybe a little coffee/mocha/tobacco impression already. Large in the mouth – still with plenty of tannin – the flavour still with good energy and quite some fluidity – that’s a wine!
Les Whites:
2022 Bourgogne Blanc
Of course this could also be labelled Beaujolais. No malo here by choice.
A nicely direct and slightly textured nose – like ripe lime. A generous width of flavour with a tiny grain of tannin too – like an acidulated ripe citrus. That’s a lovely finish.
Crémant
The same base wine as the previous, made by a Cremant specialist in Fleurie.
Hmm, nicely round and seems riper than the Bourgogne. A wine with a hint of structure that slowly melts over the palate – that’s a nice invitation to take another sip – yum!
