Grégory on 2023 & 2022:
“Yes very happy with 2023 – there was volume and that helped balance the warmth of the vintage – I think they will be very Beaujolais wines – currently they are maturing elegantly 😊
“2022 was a smaller volume vintage – we suffered from the dryness, perhaps St.Amour a little less than some of the other crus as we have some quite deep soils that retain the water – we managed 45 hl/ha vs some others that hardly reached 30. So quite an easy year in the vines – and the work afterwards in the cuverie was fine – we don’t like to harvest late and this can bring some problems. All the bottlings have been done – we do in the summer for the first wines and Poulette and Carrejour are done in November after a longer elevage.”
The wines…
Slightly tight today – but when not, great !!
2022 St.Amour l’Age de Raisin
The cuvée celebrating the 7th vintage of the domaine. On blue stone. Only whole clusters used here with elevage in grès jars – vines in the lieu-dit of La Pirolette
An open and red-fruited nose, faintly spiced – it’s a good invitation. Large scale in the mouth – flavours that are framed by a small tannin but virtually grainless. Wide, supple, and deliciously flavoured – a little stricter finishing – nice! Perhaps a hint of licorice here. Tasty wine!
2022 St.Amour Pirolette
The classic cuvée of the domaine – one-third destemmed. Multiple soil types here
A more profound depth, perhaps a faint reduction here – but I think not fully open today. Larger scale than the previous wine – a hint more juicy energy too. Just an easier more mouth-watering finish – yum!
A single soil type here. The same vinification as the last and some concrete eggs – it’s from Poulette! – for the elevage.
At last! Here we have a very open and perfumed nose – simply a wonderful invitation. In the mouth extra scale, less visible tannin – but still some. I love the shape and growing intensity of flavour – it lasts so long too. Already excellent, this could be a great wine – I’d have a couple of years of patience but could easily drink it this weekend too!
2022 St.Amour Le Carjot
These vines 200m from the last but with a slightly different exposure and more blue stone.
A broad nose that implies a velvet texture – but less open than the Poulettes – a little peppery. In the mouth this melts over the palate – perhaps behind is a little more density of dark fruit than Poulettes – the flavour is strong and delicious. More obviously for keeping than the last and perhaps a small step higher – except for the nose today.
