Emmanuel & Nadège on their recent vintages:
“In 2023 we had a big storm and even a small amount of hail in Brouilly during the harvest – we harvested mainly in the mornings and it went okay. The 2023s are, perhaps, a little more alcoholic than the 2022s. 2022 was a smaller volume vintage and it was a very early harvest – 26th August !! Again with more morning harvesting as we respect the workers as much as the grapes! Our Les Oiseau was very quickly sold out.”

Daughter, Suzanne, is now starting to work a little with the domaine…

The wines…

It’s a pleasure to visit this tucked-away, secluded, domaine – such tasty wines too !!

The cuvée names of the reds recollect the different types of birds in the forest around the domaine:

2022 Beaujolais Villages Le Pic Noir
Very old vines – 130 !! – the young vines here were planted in 1945! Partly on Bluestone – this is the first vintage with the organic labelling. This bird recalling the old trees in the woods that enclose these old vines – the pic noir (bird!) needing old trees…
A little width of red fruit that’s faintly spiced, indeed almost muscaté. Large scale – a base of fine tannin – not a bit of dryness – faintly creamy finishing – That’s a very tasty wine – yum!

2022 Brouilly Rossignol
Degraded pink granite here even a little bluestone. And of course the birds…
A broader width of aroma, slightly more perfumed in style. Large scale with fine energy in the mouth – and almost smoky aromatic like the first – the finish is more mineral and longer lasting too that’s lovely.

2022 Côte de Brouilly Les Cailloux
This is still in foudre probably to bottle in May-June – so obviously a longer elevage – 13° in 2022. The 2020 is the current commercial vintage of this
A super width of aroma, slightly generous, here but with some graphite-style minerality. Still a slight CO2 but a wine that’s really wide and slowly mouth-watering, supple, almost generously flavoured and textured – that’s going to be very lovely when you can buy it in another couple of years!

2022 Côte de Brouilly Py Bad
Actually the Lieu-dit Brouilly – also not yet bottled – A little barrel elevage here too.
Higher-toned aromatic energy here. In the mouth too – like the last with a little CO2 but large in scale and faintly accented with the creamy barrel just now. Slowly fading flavour with a small touch of tannin at the end…

Les Whites
They are just beginning to commercialise their 2022s. The vines are mainly on argilo-calcaire soils – Denicé and Rivolet – argilo-limoneux too:

2022 Beaujolais Blanc Cuvée Ammonite
Viniified with elevage also in tank.
A nicely fresh and direct nose, almost a hint of aniseed. In the mouth fresh and of width, faintly tannic and juicy, saline finishing.

2022 Beaujolais Blanc Fût de Chêne
1 year of elevage – mainly old barrels but there are a couple of new barrels per year.
Small yet airy notes, a hint saline. Fine scale – almost a hint spicy – and with a more overt tannin. You can hardly see the oak, perhaps the faintest creaminess in the middle to finishing flavours.

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
