Thibaud on 2023 & 2022:
“2023 – very nice – I’m very happy. We had a lot more production in 2023, 42 hl/ha – it was only 35 hl/ha in 2022. In 2023 we had no hail. 11-23 September harvesting – actually, it was a similar date in 2022 – but 2022 was the smallest volume harvest also as we had a lot of vines not yet in production – so we only had 1 week of harvesting. Yes, I think we made some serious wines in 2022 – and that’s without much extraction – more infusions – I’m not sure I’d have been so happy if I’d extracted more!”
The wines…
Such a classy set of wines- it has become the standard here…
2023(!) Beaujolais-Villages Gamay Rouge
Carbonic for 7 days, bottled 10 January without filtration. Already sold out – 90% in France.
Modest colour. A fresh, quite airy but growing a more intense nose. Supple, good breadth – like the nose high toned – and with very attractive flavour. High-toned florals to finish – not quite gentian – but quite delicious – I’d still keep it 6-12 months though.
2022 Juliénas
Vines of different parcels around the house of the domaine – not a long elevage for this one.
More colour. More impact and a little darker fruit aroma. Extra in the mouth – scale, juiciness, concentration – more of everything. More delicious finishing. I might even drink this before the last – it’s excellent.
2022 St.Amour Tête de Bonnet
Harvested 5 September.
More direct, intense but silky impression to this clean fruit. Broad, great energy – that tannin showing a little more – but without grain. Extra finishing intensity – love it, that could be a more than excellent St.A!!
2022 Juliénas Vayolette
Northern slopes, deep soil – there’s some clay that runs through here too. Harvested 7th September
A wider nose – showing some creamy oak in this case. In the mouth we have a blend of scale and concentration, these flavours melting over the palate. Some finishing bitters in this complexity, here again accented with some barrel – but in 12 months I think it will hardly be visible – the 2020 is anyway the commercial vintage here at the moment. That’s another super wine.
A little less aromatic attack and a redder style to the fruit. It’s the first vintage with no wood for the elevage – ‘and I’m very happy with it!’ Supple, quite silky – becoming more velour as the tannin surfaces. Some salinity and the bitters too, they bring quite a dynamic energy to this finishing flavour. I’d keep this a bit longer – 2+ years but I love it – it could be great!
2022 Morgon Les Charmes
Near St.Joseph, bought already with AB certification. The climat wines wax sealed.
The most open and ‘charming’ red fruit nose – of really lovely clarity. A lovely energy and an almost fluid style that balances well the concentration – the intensity remains but is subtly rounded – there was a little oak used – so it’s neither sharp nor hard, just intense. The finish again with a few bitters. A beautiful wine that I’d certainly be drinking before the 4 Cerisiers! Yum!
And something white:
2023(!) Beaujolais-Villages BLanc
It just says Chardonnay on the label but BJV on the rear label – ‘We are in Beaujolais’ – Whites from Beaujolais are selling very well right now
That has a nice blend of freshness and a sherbet-style sweet energy – ripe but not exotic. In the mouth, energetic, open, aromatic but with a nice direct style – and without rigour or hardness – it’s delicious and even a little chalky finish with a little white pear flesh – that’s, frankly, delicious!!
2023(!) Beaujolais-Jullié
500-l barrels in the main for elevage – some quite old. Bottled in August, assembled in foudre.
A more considered nose. Like the finish of the last, a little pear fruit. This has more clarity and more open shape – not quite the same vivaciousness but here is a mouth-watering and rather sophisticated wine – also very delicious – just a little less aromatically brash. That’s excellent – the previous is slightly more delicious today though.
