Stéphane on 2023 & 2022:
In 23 we are happy now that all the wines are in elevage – they have a similar line, the aromas, to 2022. I think it’s good. But 22 was hot and dry, some rain in June and July – fortunately – but August was the hottest since 2003. We harvested 23 or 24 August so the earliest in our (short) history. 2022 was still an okay volume despite the dryness – correct – but we had a little more in 2023 that’s for sure. Comparing styles, maybe the 23s will be ready before the 22s but we can be pleased to have 2 consecutive – ‘attractive’ vintages!

” There was an early bottling for a couple of wines to be ready for Wine Paris, done a couple of weeks earlier – but the others will be done in the coming 2-3 weeks. Tradition was done in January. We did a long elevage on our 21s and we are just starting to really enjoy them.”

The wines…

I wouldn’t be drinking any of these in the first 2 years and maybe the Rochgres in more like in 5 – but that’s an exceptional wine! Bravo – such a great range in 2022!

2022 Moulin à Vent ‘Tradition
A nose of freshness, depth and silk. Large scale, but also of super texture. Concentrated, broad, with lots of depth and some finishing bitters – the stems were very clean in 2022. This is very, very long.

2022 Moulin à Vent Champ de Cour
This is the new cuvée – 10 months of elevage in concrete egg. Previously this was blended into the Tradition but in 22 they felt a much more characterful wine.
A little extra graphite-style notes on the nose. Juicy, dark fruit, supported by a tiny grain of tannin but hardly any dryness. Wide, intense, with a little licorice and the aforementioned graphite. Again really persistent in the finish.

2022 Moulin à Vent La Rochelle
65-year-old vines just at the foot of Roche Grès.
A larger nose, part airy part of concentration and depth. I sense a little of the wood (a mix of barrel sizes) but also impressive volume where the structure and the tannin are more visible. Again a super persistence. These wines are just so impressive finishing!

2022 Moulin à Vent Rochegrès
More aromatic intensity in this high-toned width – this is the most perfumed of all. Large scale but with the roundness of elevage of the last – the grain of tannin more present but ultra-fine – velvet- though with an accent of dryness. That could be a great one!
