Louis-Clement on 2023 & 2022.
“2023 went very well – we had a good volume and I like the wines. In 2023 there is Moulin à Vent too! Sales could be better though! 2022 was a lower volume as the flowering wasn’t great so we had a lot of coulure – so it’s not a big volume here. We started harvesting 18 August though – that’s a record! But it’s also a tendance! I do like the vintage – except the half volume due to dry and hot at flowering – everything was millerandes I had to shorten the macerations or the wines would have been too hard. You can see it’s a little solar and it’s still marked a little by its bitters – vs 23 which has a balance halfway between 21 and 22
“New, we are buying some grapes – we have an aligoté – because I like it! But of course, it’s labelled as a Bourgogne. I might even plant some here in Juliénas – these vines are in Bissey – aligoté on granite – it makes a nicely nervous wine.”
The wines…
As always – a super range – now with a white too!
2023(!) Beaujolais Villages
Bottled 20 October – ‘Made for the Nouveau market – we didn’t have a Nouveau in 22 as there wasn’t a lot of yield. Just 1g sulfur at bottling time – no filtration and no destemming’
A good scale to this nose – darker red fruit energy – but a little cushion too. Some gas with plenty of energy. This is long and has a little mineral intensity. It will be even better in another 6-12 months!
2022 Beaujolais Villages Les Trois Verres
Chapelle de Guinchay – half a hectare of vines that belong to the family of Jules Chauvet.
Darker, and it’s a deeper well of fruit too – slightly cushioned like the last. Large scale in the mouth – almost an effervescence despite no overt gas – finishing with lovely red-fruited energy and some modest finishing bitters that bring both energy and interest – wait 6 months – plus. But this is super – and it’s long too!
2022 Julienas Vayolette
From the west of the appellation on a plain south-facing, steep slope, the soil is bluestone. Have a 3ha parcel.
A wider, if less deep nose – here is a lovely clarity of more floral fruit. Large scale – really some flavour energy here – filling every corner of the mouth, chiselled. Juicy – I really love this delicious finish.
2022 Juliénas La Bottière
Concrete elevage but in the future maybe with more stainless steel.
Deeper and more concentrated from the oldest vines of the domaine. Large scale also, slightly less energy, certainly a bit more generous – probably a good thing! Super wine – you can drink the Vayolette for a couple of years while you are waiting for the Bottière – Simply excellent wine!
And that ‘nervous’ wine?
2022 Bourgogne Aligoté
Elevage in old white barrels – the wine slightly cloudy – bottled though. ‘It went through a reductive phase in the bottle but that’s gone now.’
There’s a nice roundness – I like it – the aromas remind me a little of a certain Cuvée Zen from the Bret Brothers – a big compliment 😉 Hmm – round in the mouth but still framed with an incisive zesty character but still silky, Then a wider finish, still zesty – what a delicious wine!
