David on 2023:
“I’m very happy with 2023 – we didn’t have any hail here and the rain – not much – came just at the right time – it was only 10mm but it was what we needed. Very happy!”
David on 2022:
“Also a nice volume and I think it’s a super vintage too. There was less work in the vines though compared to 2023. We had plenty of sugar and the fermentations were fine – but long – I think we are better now than a few years ago at dealing with that. Bottling was around June and commercialisation since October. I do see a lot of similarities between the wines of the two vintages. I think 2022 is a super vintage.”
The wines…
A very good range from David in 2022 – his white is particularly impressive !!
2022 Beaujolais Villages
A large part of the vines are around the house and domaine here, whereas the Brouilly is in Odénas
There is width here – and freshness but the nose is a little tight today. Plenty of depth to this flavour – a little structure with a faint tannin too – darkly flavoured like graphite in the finish. A ripe wine and one whose structure would have me waiting a year or so before returning – the finish is impressively long …
2022 Brouilly
A more direct nose with a lovely clarity to its red fruit. Mouth-filling – growing in intensity but there’s a juicy flavour to this wine that keeps you close and holds you in the long finish – almost a hint less structure here than the BJV – I’d still probably wait 12 months before drinking but it’s a little less needed. Delicious wine!
2021(!) Beaujolais Villages Fut de Chêne
10 months in barrel then around a month in tank before bottling. This the current commercial vintage.
A lot of creamy vanilla in these aromas. But this wine is round and fruity too – it’s for those that really like creamy vanilla though. I think it will still taste like this when it’s 5 years old!!
2021(!) Brouilly Cuvée Anaïs
There’s a little oak here but a few registers less than the last wine. Clean, super texture – really fine velour – that’s still got plenty of finishing oak but it may be less visible in 3+ years. Excellent in its style – particularly for a 2021 !!
2022 Beaujolais Villages Rosé
Only a very lite colour here – the lightest of pink. Perfumed, faintly warm fruit – that’s a fine invitation. Round, supple, but with waves of juicy flavour over the palate. That’s a simply excellent wine – juicy and delicious!
Hmm, that’s a nicely direct citrus without overt generosity – I’m ready!! A beauty – fresh, mineral, tension, not heavy or over-ripe, nor over-oaked – just a simple but delicious chardonnay. Bravo!
