Yannick on 2023:
“I think 23 is superb – we already did some tastings and it went well. I think we have concentration despite the volume but also quality. We waited a while to harvest – my dad used to be the first to harvest I’m nearly the last!”
Yannick on 2022:
“In 2022 we had no hail here – we can say the dryness contributed to a lower volume but we also started with fewer grapes after flowering so… I waited quite a while to harvest and that worked out as we had some rain which brought an extra freshness. I had good critiques of my 2022s, so some are sold out. Because of that we will be moving very quickly to commercialise the 23 vintage.”
The wines…
A very good range in 2022 and the Beaujolais Villages – Beaujolais-Vaux – was great!
2022 Beaujolais Villages Le Clos de Valentin
The old clos of the chateau – 1,5 ha – An old vine cuvée ‘of 60-80 year-old vines plus a few that had just 25 years old for the freshness’
Dark fruit and freshness in this width of aroma. In the mouth, there’s a more red fruit style, cherry/redcurrant blend. That’s got a nice texture, a little structure and juicy finish. Wait a year this will be very good.
One of the first to label his villages with the name of the village. This with the only addition of sulfur just before bottling.
Hmm – that’s deeper, darker fruited but a little floral too – it’s a really inviting nose. Larger in scale, framed with a tiny but not drying tannin. A beautiful finish with a little energy and mouth-watering, sweet, dark fruit. Simply an excellent wine – and a top BJV!
2022 Brouilly Creigne
A good freshness of darker red fruit here – it’s a good invitation to take a sip. Hmm, depth of flavour, wrapped with a little grainless tannin. Structured and with a super extra dimension of finishing flavour – ooh – that’s a super wine – wait 1-2 years before you start drinking these. The finish really persistent and of redder fruit.
2022 Beaujolais-Vaux Cuvée de Jacques
From 3 year-old François Frères barrel – bottled 1 month.
A large scale nose – high toned. In the mouth this is nicely shaped and the barrel is very well integrated – you can taste a slight caramel but it’s not too distracting. The finish is really delicious. It’s not often I think of barrel flavours as positive but this works very well!!
