In every instance I’ve tasted a wine from here, I’ve been impressed – except when I’ve tasted those wines in the tasting room at the domaine. So I tried them in a different place today – St.Amour – with Gregory Barbet.
On 2021:
“There was no frost here in 2021. These 2021 wines started commercialisation at the end of last year. The major market for these is restaurants and the 2020s sold very quickly – so we are already now selling the 21s. The Régnié of Terrière is in conversion to organic – and that will be completed this year – so our 2023 harvest will be AB.”
The wines…
The 21s were good but a little austere – in this case, the 2020s really showed them how to do it!
2021 Château de Terrière, Beaujolais Villages Vieilles-Vignes
Régnié declassified to BJV – as they have so much Régnié!
A breadth of freshness with modest herb – but nothing green. Mouth-filling, nicely shaped, a faint grain of tannin but no dryness – there are currently plenty of finishing bitters – so I wouldn’t rush to drink this – wait 1-2 years and it should be a bit less austere.
2021 Château de Terrière, Brouilly Tradition
12 ha in the lieu-dit Terrière – pink granite with some clay here, not so draining due to the clay. Facing Mont-Brouilly, south-facing
Plenty of colour. Fuller, fresher, more fruity aromatics – but darker fruit. Hmm, that’s another level – juicy, intense, again with a faint tannin – there’s intensity in these finishing flavours that brings a little austerity – but on a much lower level to the BJV. This is very good – give it another 12-18 months and you will be very happy!
2021 Régnié Vin Sauvage a Poil
The polar bear wine (climat Le Siberie – see image at top of the page), from old vines vinified and 2 ha of 1911 vines and with no added sulfur at all so ‘The most stressful wine to make!’ Was bottled in April, the rest mainly in May except the MaV near the harvest.
Lots of colour again. There’s some impact from this nose – silky too. The most supple and comfortable wine in the mouth – slightly reductive – but that’s no bad thing, I’d carafe today but this is the tastiest and most ‘comfortable’ of this trio – That’s excellent for a zero added sulfur wine.
And some 2020s:
2020 Régnié Vin Sauvage a Poil
Tons of colour. For a natural wine this is relatively pure and fruity – a slightly cushioned dark, almost blue, fruit. Pleasing, open – plenty of volume and very mouth-watering. Dark fruit flavours that are intense but never too much. Simply excellent for a ‘no-sulfur’ wine – again!
2020 Château de Terrière, Beaujolais Villages Vieilles-Vignes
Plenty of colour though less intense than ‘vin sauvage.’ Open, easier aromas with plenty of high tones and good precision – more red fruit. More direct and cool – I like the shape and the structure, here. Juicy with a modest frame of tannin – hardly any grain and no dryness. The finish holding well with some licorice notes. Again, an excellent wine – super BJV!
All destemmed, some pigeage and grilled. A maceration of 20 days here. 30 hl foudres for elevage.
Lots of aromatic energy – clarity of dark fruit and as I never seem to tire of saying – freshness – simply lovely! Fluid, energetic, cool style but there’s depth and a growing intensity to this flavour. That’s a wonderful Brouilly – concentration but with nothing overdone. Finishing with a kick of graphite minerality and some extra floral notes too. Potentially a great one.
2 parcels.
Again, plenty of colour. The oak elevage is obvious yet here is a fine-textured width of concentrated, complex aroma – very impressive. Really top-level in the mouth – fluid, wonderfully textured and showing an impressive extra depth of flavour. The oak is obvious but as quite an aromatic component. This is super-impressive, despite the creamy, almost vanilla accents in the long-finishing flavour. Return in 5-8 years – it will be a great one!
Open, airy – much more fruit-driven aromatics after the MaV – slowly becoming floral too. Extra juicy – ooh that’s a super wine – the energy visible in all directions, visibly making the finish longer and more dynamic. What a wine! The most captivating of these 20s for today!
