Gilles on 2022:
“I’m happy – and we had a bit less of the deficit seen by some of our neighbours. We have a good density of vines per hectare and we’ve worked the soils for many years so in a dry vintage I think that we had some advantages.”
Gilles on 2021:
“This time the volume was not really okay, 10-20% lower volume, depending on the area. We had some frost – and the sector here is susceptible to maladies but even with the small windows for treatment with 2 tractors we had the chance to treat the whole domaine in 1 day – but some days we had to use 5 people and spray by hand as it was too wet in the vines. I think 19 lacked a bit of structure but 21 has it and could be a better vintage – at least here.”
The wines…
Always attractive wines at this domaine and made with insight too – not a green wine to be seen – properly great white Beaujolais too – if that’s your thing!
2022(!) Beaujolais Villages Sans Souffre
Currently commercializing 2020 here but – this bottled in December – 13.6° natural:
That’s a wonderfully cushioned, fine dark fruit. Round, less directly structural than most 2021s but a wine of comfort and tasty flavour!
2021 Beaujolais Villages Sans Souffre
Second bottling 08 Feb.
A tighter nose due to the bottling. More direct, structural and sweeping – that’s showing nicer – apart from the nose – excellent!
2021 Beaujolais-Lancié
This won’t be commercialised before the last part of 2023. Like all the BJV here, all is in Lancié.
A faint reduction then a width of darker-red fruit. Hmm, there’s a lot of material here – tannis too – but ripe! Web harvested late – 60% of the BJ was already harvested.
2021 Fleurie
Very old vines with 11k density of plantation. Also bottled in August but for commercializing a year after the bottling.
This nose starts both compact, and a hint reductive. Ooh – directly juicy flavour – darker-red fruit, proper structure and fine energy – there’s a modest austerity today – it suggests some patience. Finishing with plenty of fine-grained, but hardly drying, tannin. Definitely wait for this one but it’s very well put together…
2021 Morgon
Bottled in May.
A freshness and width, the fruit still modest but also still clean and attractive. Open, fine, structural, a hint of barrel in the flavours but not in the aromas. A very classic Morgon – it’s super.
Just about to be commercialised, from Fromenteau and Burdelines
A punch of ripe, pure dark fruit – just too decadent! Powerful, full, some tannic grain – a beast of a wine – I’d wait 5 years to start drinking this. It’s potentially a great wine though obviously in the style of the vintage.
Made in the same low-temperature way as the blanc. Bottled since mid January.
A very pretty nose – a little round and forward but not fat or too much make-up. Great shape, fine minerality – beautifully crafted – wait a year – this will be great rosé
All from Lancié, on limestone, worked at a low temperature. Malo half blocked in this vintage.
This is a little fresher than the typical white from this vintage – fresh, some citrus but not with overt exotic fruit – slowly this adds a little minerality too. Supple, mouth-filling actually framed with plenty of tannin for a white. And finishing clean and attractive – one of the best whites of my tour!
2022(!) Beaujolais Villages Blanc
Will be bottled in a few weeks. All malo is done here.
A more perfumed width. Supple, round – plenty of tannin – a little more ripeness to this citrus – but not exotic. That’s a super white too!
