Cédric on 2022:
Ah! Our vines are old and the dryness of the summer really reduced our yields – versus the authorised yields we made less than half but we never get close to those authorised yields anyway – but still it was a low volume. The vinifications went well – so I’m happy.

Cédric on 2021:
2021 was definitely a weak vintage for volume – it was the spring frosts that we can principally blame. This was also less than half a vintage. All are bottled, and we have very little in stock now. But I’d rather have a modest volume than modest quality!

The wines…

Based on what was left – a short but sweet tasting though the Julienas wasn’t immune to the green notes of the vintage.

2021 Juliénas Beauvernay
This nose is half floral, half green. Direct, incisive even, with vibrant acidity. The is green less visible in the flavours – decant this – I hope with some time in bottle it will add a little weight too. But the finish is nicely perfumed – that’s the best part today.

2021 Fleurie Les Moriers
Largest cuvée of the domaine – 7 hectares worth – old photos (1920s) show the Clos de Morriers cru ‘belonging’ to MaV
That’s fine – a width of pretty red fruit and certainly a Fleurie ‘style.’ Definitely fresh – there’s tension here! But there’s energy and purity to this wine – more fruit intensity in the middle and finish – less perfumed in the finish than the Julienas today – but much more wine visible today – this is very good.
