Alex & Agnès on 2022:
22 – really heterogenous – some places with much lower volume, others not we did a bit more than in 21. About a third less volume but we weren’t hit by frost.

Alex & Agnès, last year, on 2021:
The worst that I’ve seen from the climate – frost, rain, mildew – some parcels in Beaujolais delivered 4 hl/ha. Morgon wasn’t too bad, actually all the crus in the mid-slopes were fine but the plains and the top of the hills were something else…

The wines…

Consistently delicious wines – though Alex’s 2021 Côte de Brouilly was extra-delicious today.

2021 Morgon Eponym
Vines in Charmes
Broad and open – some depth of fruit here too. Mouth-filling, only very faintly tannic – a small frame – the finish wide and very tasty. A lovely wine.

2021 Jean Foillard, Morgon Cuvée Corcelette
Granite here and very sandy – this brings the fruit and the flowers.
The slightly reductive, savoury, nose of the lower sulfur wines. Extra clarity, the tannin without grain – that’s a beautiful, open wine with clarity of flavour and beautiful texture. A wine of energy and almost fluidity too – it’s excellent!

2021 Jean Foillard, Morgon Côte de Py
A more vertical nose – high and low tones – that’s very fine. Wide, but a wine that’s growing in intensity in the mouth – a more cushioned concentration. Some extra finishing structure. There’s more here than the Corcelette but the Corcelette is a little more fluid – similarly excellent!

2021 Jean Foillard, Fleurie
3 ha in lieu-dit ‘Champagne’ plain-south facing.
Here is the wine that’s most obviously in the natural style but it’s very attractive too. Incisive, beautiful silky texture. A different style of middle and finishing flavour – comfortable, red fruit. Clearly the Fleurie among this bunch! Delicious wine.

2021 Alex Foillard, Côte de Brouilly
More sand, less granite here – about 30 and 50-year-old vines. Bottled in August, this and the next
A breadth of aroma, slightly padded. Fresh – lots of volume – juicy flavour, faintly tannic – this is such a drinkable, delicious wine – simply excellent. The last impression has a faint tannin that rests on the tongue. Yes!

2021 Alex Foillard, Brouilly
On a hill so more structured than his Côte de Brouilly. 2/3rds in-barrel elevage for this wine – the reverse of the last.
A more silky and perfumed width of aroma. Fresh, direct, incisive. The middle and finish a little more tannic and serious. This young wine is more for waiting than the Côte de Brouilly but I think it will be equally good – you know which order to drink them!
