Richard on 2022:
“Fortunately, in 22 we had rain when we needed it so I made 45 hl/ha which I’m very happy with – the wines are balanced and I think will bring a super vintage. After the frost of 2021 we had a lot of grapes in 2022 – but they were small ones so I think the relative dryness helped because the volumes could have exploded – I think we can be happy…”
Richard on 2021:
“It’s not easy – we had not very much in 21 because of the frost but there are things to pay so I’m already starting to bottle some 22s. We had only 12 hl/ha – the mid-slope and higher vines were okay in Moulin à Vent but my vines are in the bottom of the slopes and they were growing when the frost came – it’s wet down here too so that, together with the frost…”
The wines…
Always delicious wines here – wines that I buy – the 21s will be better in another year – if you can find them. The early 22s are superb…
A small first bottling at the end of January – a little Chablis style of multiple bottlings to pay the bills this year… I have 1.3 hectares that have joined the production – vines behind the domaine – planted 4 years ago. The market has changed a lot this label was hard to sell 10 years ago – now we can’t keep up with the demand, particularly organic. 70% semi-carbo.
Ooh – that’s forward and deliciously attractive – I’m shocked – because I’m mainly tasting 21s! Supple, saline, broad, complex – just a great BJV – and finishing direct, clean and slightly mineral. Bravo!
2022 Brouilly
To be bottled next week.
Round – with more depth of aroma, if a little less open. Some gas so there’s extra energy – a wine that broadens over the palate – becoming very tasty. That’s another very lovely wine – ‘Yes 2022s are like that, I think 2020 was a little over ripe but not the 22s.‘
2021 Brouilly
Not austere but higher toned – such a difference to the 22. Nice energy, sinuous, direct, mouth-watering. Tasty and delicious – juicy finishing wine. A lovely wine – Excellent for the vintage.
2021 Moulin à Vent
‘I normally have 5 different cuvées but this year just 2 – all organic – I keep the Thorins separate because it’s not finishing its certification for organic. This is labelled AB.’
Hmm – a properly broad and pure fruity nose – a fine invitation – becoming more perfumed too. Light style but energetic and complex – a moreish and very tasty wine – lovely!
2021 Moulin à Vent Les Thorins
Barrel elevage for 10 months and look to extract a bit more.
Less open but with a little more density to this aroma – subtly complex. Open, fluid, washing over the palate – less overtly concentrated, but then in the middle, you have some extra density and slowly opening extra complexity – this a little tighter today – but delicious.
For the road:
Ooh – what a great nose – fruity, attractive, floral – yes! Supple – mobile, cool, complex – concentrated but not to excess – perfectly balanced great wine!
