Pierre-Maxime on 2022:
“22 – it was a good year. Rich in sunshine, we had to look to keep as much acidity as possible. The volume was okay in the whites but on the granite for the gamays – it was really only half a harvest”
Pierre-Maxime on 2021:
“For us, 2021 wasn’t badly frosted – the local problem was the subsequent hail which hit our St.Véran badly. So it was complicated. We didn’t have a lot more than 1/3rd of a harvest. In Leynes we had 25% frost but they recovered reasonably – then half of what remained got hit by the hail. For the reds it was the reverse – the volume wasn’t bad.”
The wines…
Vineyards that straddle the border of Beaujolais and Mâconnais – their St.Amour La Folie was easily the star of the tasting!
These reds are about 50% destemmed:
2021 Côteaux Bourguinon
There’s a very attractive red fruit. Broad, fine energy – a little minerality and structure. Hmm – properly intense in the middle and finishing flavour. Keep this back 12 months – it will be very good.
2021 Beaujolais Leynes
Vines exposed to the south, all whole-cluster with a carbonic maceration
A faint green on this nose – but airy and still quite attractive. Large scale – plenty of flavour energy – open nicely structured, modestly accented with some green notes. Good wine.
2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Vines in Leynes, planted in 2015.
A smoky nose – of depth. Broad over the palate – the smoky oak is visible but the texture is of velvet and the finish long and juicy. I’d wait for the barrel notes to fade a little but this tastes very well.
2021 St.Amour A la Folie
The domain has 6 ha of St.Amour 4.5 of this and 2 of Chapitre
A fresh width but not such a large nose. Supple, larger scaled, silky – super shape- fine texture – that is is really fine – becoming very juicy in the finish – that’s a great finish! Excellent wine.
2021 St Amour Clos de Chapitre
Just over the road from the previous wine, here with a bit less de-stemming. Similar stony terroir to the last with only a modest slope.
Lots of colour. This nose is higher toned, with less fruit. More fruit forward – still plenty of scale – extra concentration. The fruit a little more roast in style – very good but I prefer La Folie today. The main differences are some pre-fermentation maceration and this destemmed partly the previous semi-carbonic
2021 Côteaux Bourguignone Rosé
All gamay
Direct, slightly structural nose. Supple, generous wine – the minerality quite visible – broad flavoured – slowly melting – I’d like a hint more strict but this is very easy and tasty wine to drink – finishes like a red.
Les whites…
DIAM type seals used here:
2022(!) Bourgogne Chardonnay
Plenty of colour. Spiced and slightly exotic aromatics. Good width over the palate – a little rigour too.
2022(!) Saint-Véran Vieilles-Vignes
Like the last, in bottle for 1 week.
Also a little spiced and with some mineral rigour… Fuller in the mouth, extra generosity – still the mineral rigour of the Bourgogne.
2021 Saint-Véran Les Cornillaux
A narrower but deep nose – for my taste a nicer freshness. Direct, cool, energetic, and nicely vibrant. That’s a really lovely wine.
2021 Saint-Véran Bois de Fée
Broader and faintly spiced. Larger scale – full of energy – a little of the oak. This is super but the more direct style of the previous is more my personal taste.
2021 Saint-Véran ‘Maceration’
Much deeper colour. A modest nose, modestly complex. Hmm, that’s rather interesting – certainly generous, plenty of concentration and plenty of tannin – a chalky impression – plenty of ripe agrume style to this wine.
Petillant Naturel
No sulfur. All chardonnay – 1g of sugar remaining
A very nice nose of apple blossom and sweetness of fruit. Round, mouth-filling – the energy of the bubbles – sweet, very tasty, a modest rigour that resembles that of the two other 22 whites. But tasty and holds a great length!
