Gilles on 2023:
“I think that, together with 22, they are the best two vintages I’ve made – certainly consecutively. Slightly more volume in 23 and maybe a bit more fresh in 22 – certainly the 22s with more freshness than either 2018 or 2020”
Gilles on 2022:
“I’m happy – and we had a bit less of the deficit seen by some of our neighbours. We have a good density of vines per hectare and we’ve worked the soils for many years so in a dry vintage I think that we had some advantages.”
The wines…
Super, every year – so consistently producing excellent wines that can tip over the border into great wines!!
Ooh – that’s a very attractive nose – a beauty. Wide, ultra delicious but properly constructed too. Precise and quite delicious – bravo!
2023(!) Beaujolais Villages Sans Souffre
In bottle since December
That could easily be a similar width of aroma to a 22 – a bit more airy than many. Large in the mouth, vibrant plenty of structure. Delicious wine already.
2022 Beaujolais-Lancié
Just in commercialisation a few months.
Not a large-scale nose but one of decent width and interest. Large in the mouth – cooler fruit and more classy structure and texture vs the Sans Souffre. A larger, super impressive, finish.
2022 Fleurie
Very old vines with 11k density of plantation. Also bottled in August but for commercializing a year after the bottling.
Plenty of colour. Dark fruit, you have to work the glass then there’s a wonderful perfume. Large in the mouth – wonderfully balanced juiciness vs the large scale and frame of structure – keep it 2 years – like most 2022s – but it will be excellent.
2022 Morgon
Commercial in another month ‘there’s a little elevage here’ – that’s Beaujolais shorthand for some wood.
Starting narrow and airy – slowly widening, becoming more perfumed. Hmm, this is a beauty – open, fluid but it has intensity too. Modest tannin in the finish – already completely excellent wine and I don’t note the barrel!!
2021(!) Moulin à Vent
Soon to be commercialised
A width of slightly grained aroma – no green! Hmm, more direct but here is width too – I see a little more oak – ‘yes it’s younger oak’ but this just misses a bit of the juicy energy of the 22s – but a super wine nonetheless.
Narrow but what depth to this nose! Extra width – extra concentration too but not lacking balance. The intensity grows in tandem with lovely energy – that’s going to be a great wine but I think it won’t come anywhere near being ready to drink for 5 years – Just so impressive!
Probably not commercialised for another year.
Hmm – the complexity and depth of a very fine MaV. Cool, larger scale even than the Fleurie – finer tannin too – intense and still a little oak in the finish but what dimensions of long-lasting finishing flavour. Wait also 3-5 years, in this case for the oak – but I think great
2018(!) Beaujolais-Villages Quintessence du Gamay
Will soon commercialise when the 2015 is done! ‘It’s a more clay soil here so it seems to preserve the acidity better.’
There’s a nice freshness to this, faintly spiced nose. Mouth-filling, almost silky cool fruit – you won’t see the extra age – it’s a baby – and the tannin is so, so fine.
2020(!) VdF Elle & Lui
This the gamay and syrah blend – made since 2012.
A different and more direct fruit. This is fresh and fluid – it’s delicious too. To drink with pleasure !!
And a little white?
2022 Beaujolais-Lancié Blanc
A breadth of faintly grained aroma – some ripe citrus but not extra ripe or exotic. Large, succulent, some sucrosity – after the reds this exactly what you need – delicious and refreshing!
