The domaine has some new parcels – two in Moulin à Vent plus some Chénas. Closer to home they are planting an amphitheatre of Beaujolais Villages – they now have 19 hectares.

Thibaud on 2022:
It’s a very good vintage but my terroirs were dry – so I can be happier with the volume we achieved in 2021. But the wines will be lovely – I can’t say ‘tipicité’ – not yet anyway. It was hot but not so hot as in either of 2020 or 2019 – it was just very dry.

Thibaud on 2021:
A similar volume to 2022 – but it depended a lot on the area. For us it was easier in 2021 as the dryness did more damage in 22 than the rain in our parcels in 2021. I had nothing that rotted – the soil took the rain no problem! But the advantage of the hillsides was lost in the heatt of the 22 vintage. I’m looking for more resilience in both directions with more organic material in the soil – all the rows are planted and I won’t change their nature in a year – but in 5 years we can already see less stress.

The wines…

A much shorter tasting this year but still with a very high standard.

September bottling – all of these wines… None were filtered. New labels for these wines now too – I like…

2021 Juliénas
A fine darker red fruit that grows and grows from the glass. Hmm – starting direct then expanding over the palate. That’s a juicy wine again of darker fruit and subtle accent of cream. Finishing very well – that’s a super wine.

2021 Morgon Les Charmes
Near St.Joseph, bought already with AB certification. The climat wines wax sealed.
Some breadth but quite a tight nose for this one. More structural wine but still juicy – like the Corton of Beaujolais. There’s a certain – almost noble – austerity to this and I like it a lot! Excellent wine!

2020(!) Juliénas Vayolette
Northern slopes, deep soil – there’s some clay that runs through here too. 1 year in 500-litre barrels then 1 year in cement – bottled without filtration – ‘this was also the first year that I had thermos-regulation!’
Fuller more concentrated and, of course, riper. Supple, some oak flavour but a style that has some fluidity about it. Plenty of tannin frames the flavours but hardly any dryness and no grain – this is ripe! Full and impressive but still with the energy and fluidity to make accessible – Excellent 2020!

And to finish:

2021 Beaujolais Villages Blanc
This first harvest in 2021 of domaine vines.
Broad, plenty of oak showing today – but it’s sweetly inviting all the same. Hmm – the oak softens this but the minerality is strong here – slightly hard – a little rigour – this together with the oaky make-up makes this not a wine for me. But there is balance and energy – it will be more interesting for me in 2-3 years when, and if, the oak has faded. The finish is chalky here – nice.
