Charlotte on the recent vintages:
Oh yes, we must be happy with 2023! 2022 certainly didn’t have the volumes of 2023 but it was clearly better than the volume of 2021. We harvested for two days in the Cote de Beaune before moving north to harvest in the Côte de Nuits. There have been some early bottlings – regionals for the moment – but the following are not yet bottled – the Vosne could possibly be done in January but the rest not before the Springtime. The plan is not to commercialise this vintage for 2-3 years as we used a little more new oak – but we are happy that both 2022 and 2023 should both absorb the barrels particularly well.

The wines…

An excerpt of the domaine’s much larger range of cuvées – but what simply excellent wines; the ‘Grand Complication‘ was clearly Grand Vin!

All the wines see a pre-fermentation maceration – around 8°C for 4-5 days – they are then allowed to ferment but not higher than 25°C:

2022 Vosne-Romanée
Lots of parcels, Violettes being the largest part but there’s also Genevrières; Aux Réas and a small part of Vigneux
That’s very aromatic, with a hint of oak spice to add to the Vosne spice. Hmm, growing broad over the palate – silky and with some extra creamy depth. The oak is obvious but actually very tasty – there is a lot of class here and the finish is tip-top – that’s a really excellent villages – even in Vosne-Romanée!

2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Les Vergelesses
About 3 ha or 10% of the domaine’s surface is in the Cote de Beaune – also with some Beaune and Savigny/Savigny 1er Cru Narbantons – 35 appellations across the domaine
A brighter more direct berry fruit here – darker-red berries. Rounder, fine freshness – less breadth than the Vosne but with fine middle concentration – less oak visible here – though a little in the finish. This is also excellent.

2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er En Ovreaux
1.78 for the total cru and here they have 1.08. Vines next to (above) Echézeaux – this is north-south planted which helps catch the early morning sun in this later-ripening place – ‘but still a place that needs a bit more patience vs the lower-lying 1ers.’
Hmm – that’s a lovely and very inviting aromatic – a little crushed raspberry fruit in here – lovely! Supple and layered, there’s both power and delicacy – you won’t find too many labels of this 1er but here’s a simply excellent one – the barrel is already almost completely absorbed – already!

2022 Echézeaux
Du Dessous, next to GE
A less forward nose – more subtle but of pretty width today and there’s a faint floral complexity. Hmm, that’s fine in the mouth – concentrated of course, but here with the fluidity of a great wine. A finish that washes over the palate, widening impressively – always a little subtle and elegant in style but really delicious!!

2022 Grands Echézeaux
With 1.44 hectares this domaine is the second largest owner – ‘Making a massive wine that needs the oak to sculpt the colossus!’
A creamy framed red fruit – very elegant. Hmm, also in the mouth; seductive, beautifully textured and very, very elegant – creamy finishing but these barrels are not distracting despite the elegance of the wine – another that’s a completely delicious wine. It’s hauntingly long too…

2022 Echézeaux ‘La Grand Complication’
Just 2 barrels, in Les Treux, a selection massale of the domaine from the 1940s – ‘those vines with lower production and the smallest berries’ – all whole cluster all new oak. Usually harvested later than the other parcels to assure stem maturity – ‘though there wasn’t a lot of difference in 22!’
Hyper elegant, super perfumed aromas – another slightly shy, coy, wine – but beautiful. Hmm – enveloping, mouth-filling, with a fine texture of velour. A finish not of bravado but of contemplative and complex notes that last and last – no gothic stems, no obvious barrel influences – just an ensemble and a beautiful wine. Bravo!
