Hélène on her recent vintages:
“In 2023, yes we had a lot of grapes but in the end not such a big volume – the weeks before harvest the temperature was not so high but then the heat came then it rained then the heat came again then it rained again – the maturities really came very quickly. To compare, 2022 was a quite easy vintage with plenty of time to make your decisions – we had to be a lot less reactive versus the 23 vintage.”
The wines…
Domaine Poulette but we tasted no Poulette! Still some good wines…
It was quite a mixture of vintages – and in different orders that we tasted. In the order tasted:
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or La Corvée au Prêtre
Just outside Vosne-Romanée with 2 plots; one of old vines – 70 – and the other much newer having replaced some aligoté
Hmm – that’s a lovely supple and clean red fruit nose – it’s very inviting. Hmm, far too easy to drink with pretty red fruit and delicious flavours. Super BCD!
2018 Côte de Nuits Villages Vierville
The domaine has 6 hectares of Côte de Nuits Villages, 2 ha here in one block, keeping the highest part of the harvest for the domaine.
Red fruit that’s a little more saline and suggesting an early impression of dried leaves. Quite high-toned fruit in these flavours – still a frame of slightly drying but hardly grained tannin – almost a juiciness of finishing flavour that has a lot in common with 2022s. I’d still wait 2 years for this structure
2021 Côte de Nuits Villages Vierville
This smells faintly of ladybugs. Nicely open, with a lovely texture but the flavour has an extra dimension – one that suggests some pyrazine – but the finish is slightly generous and quite delicious – only later the last remnants of structure that resemble the 2018… Good in parts!
2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Vierville
More direct, the fruit with an extra crystalline character. Fuller, red fruit – there’s concentration here. Really broad in the finish – again with the family last rasp of the tannin. That’s quite good.
2022 Côte de Nuits Villages Vierville
This nose is a little closed – but clean. Hmm – here is much more overt energy. Mouth-filling, quite juicy – framed with very fine tannin but still some tannin right in the finish too – a little less grained. That will be lovely but you should wait at least 3 years.
2022 Nuits St.Georges Les Vallerots
Hmm, that’s a more intense red fruit and with nice purity too. Elegant, broad, juicy finishing, less overtly structural and more accessible – this has a fine taste. Lovely wine!
2021 Nuits St.Georges 1er Les Vaucrains
Perfumed wine – pretty red fruit too. Larger scale in the mouth – structured but hardly a grain to this tannin. Again quite juicy like a 22 with an extra little oak complexity in the middle and finishing flavours – a deliciously open wine. I would wait 2 years for the modest oak to fade further it’s very good wine.
Les Whites:
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Chardonnay
Vines in Corgolion, direction Ladoix – not far from Ardhuy. Always low temp ferments – 18° max.
Creamy, cushioned nose with a little sweet pineapple. You can sense a little the CO2 here. But easy and fresh over the palate and quite a good length too.
2022 Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc Beauregard
View (over the cemetery) to Mont Blanc.
A very similar aromatic. Again a quite a bit of gas. The difference is a little more linear and mineral in these flavours and they are really good flavours – again very good though very, very similar to the last.
