Maxime on 2022:
“It’s a vintage that’s worked very well and in both colours too. We had rain that came when we needed it – for example just after the flowering – June brought a generous rain which meant that the vines didn’t suffer in the middle of the summer when it was dry. There was also a small north wind that kept everything bearable too! We recovered from the volumes of 2021 too but there was not too much volume – around 35 hl/ha. We started to harvest 02 September and in Chambolle – a contract – and started the domaine wines on the next day. We have more cuvées this year as they arrived from within the family, attacking the work in the vines right from the start of the year. Some things are already racked and a couple are bottled but all are at different stages of ageing right now. Juiciness? Yes. it’s a big characteristic of the vintage. From the start, I thought we had high quality and a vintage that respects the hierarchy of our wines. It’s never easy with the rendement but I think we had the right balance as the wines are not too concentrated due to low volumes. We are less and less interventionist and it works even better – so I’m very happy with 2022.”
The wines…
A further extended range this year with even more wines from the family domaine, now closed, of Daniel Rion. Very high quality with a number of great wines – but well-structured wines too – quite a number where I’d be waiting 2-3 years before popping the first corks !!
2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Premeaux and Chambolle fruit blended from contracts and also domaine wines assembled this year.
Quite forward and deep nose. A mix of the floral and fruit which is a lovely combination. Actually, quite a structural wine and I’d be thinking of waiting a couple of years to drink but the flavours are lovely!
2022 Bourgogne Les Bons Batons
The well-known vines from the commune of Chambolle and the domaine wine
More composed, a little narrower but also more focused. Broad over the palate melting with lots of fruit and impressive depth too. Still a slight austerity but this is much more approachable already vs the previous. It will be a clearly excellent Bourgogne!
In Comblanchien a mix of 3 lieu-dits – One-third domaine vines for this.
Deeper, darker fruit. More mouth-filling and with extra density too. Really tons of wine here – this will be a great CDNV – but you should wait 3 or-so years!
This the négoce cuvée – like the first Bourgogne
Ooh – that’s a beauty – very cliché floral accented in this case darker red fruit – a great villages nose. Supple, fine-textured – just a little velour in the middle. Gorgeously flavoured wine – that’s a benchmark villages Chambolle – wait 2+ years and be happy!
The vines near Bonnes-Mares with Fuées above – 40-year-old vines. This is a domaine wine.
As always a more open fresh width of aroma here – less overtly floral than the ‘basic’ Chambolle. More intense, cool fruit, texturally tannic – without grain and also hardly any dryness. Great shape and wonderful finishing intensity. A wine you can enjoy for the next 30 years and probably more approachable than the previous – I might be tempted in just a year.
2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Charmes
“It’s just the road that separates this Charmes from Amoureuses” – Part of this vineyard from 1925 ‘and still in a good condition.’
A much calmer nose – there’s depth but the top notes remain tight. The tighter nose slowly adding some top notes as the air gets to work, becoming fleshy and attractive. Supple and growing broader in scale. The structure is visible but so is the beautiful fruit-led flavour. And it’s long in a more mineral style too. This will be simply excellent!
2022 Vosne-Romanée
3 different lieu-dits – a third of each.
A fine nose that’s less forward than the Charmes – spiced and maybe with a hint of tobacco complexity too. So wide it’s almost panoramic – properly structured – you would be advised to wait a couple of years again – but a super villages once more!
2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Beaumonts
There is a bit more creamy depth to this darker fruit – it’s very inviting. Larger scale in the mouth – very open and complex – this is seriously good.
2022 Nuits St.Georges Vieilles-Vignes
On the plateau next to Chateau Gris and Langecourt between Nuits and Premeaux
Hmm – here is a very fine and enticing width of fruit and floral aromatics. A little stricter shaped but the texture is never more than velour. Strong finishing with an extra salinity. This is yet another super villages – to wait for – again 1-2 years!
2022 Nuits St.Georges Les Barrières
‘Its a villages-plus like Cras – not far from Vosne’s Reas, near the bicycle route – domaine’
A narrow nose but one of depth and some pretty spiced fruit top notes. Broad – really mouth-filling – and only at the end a bit more structural and Nuits-like. It’s a beauty but wait 2-3 years I think!
2022 Nuits St.Georges 1er Haute Pruliers
Under Chateau Gris – a band of vines with n-s training and about 80cm of soil – ‘It has character!’
Plenty of colour but like all of these – never ultra dark. A little graphite complexity in the dark-fruited aroma. Dark berries in the flavour too. Almost texturally chewy in the middle and finishing flavours. Slowly fading. Proper Nuits with beautiful fruit – keep it 5 years before approaching…
2022 Nuits St.Georges 1er Clos des Argillières
Replanted a portion of the nearly 70-year-old vines with domaine’s massale selection.
More open and expressive high tones – good floral energy too. That energy possibly due to a hint of gas – but this wine is panoramic over the palate – quite fluid too given the impressive concentration. The finish shows more Nuits structure but it’s more manageable today vs that of the Haute Pruliers. Again be patient 3-5 years before attacking!
A little less large but this nose has fine dark-fruit detail and some elegant higher floral tones. A sizzle of gas again. Even more fluid than the last and more direct in style – once more with super concentration that, this time, forms extra intensity. Wonderful texture – always the greatest of the Nuits here – and downright great at that – not many from Les St.Georges can match it.
Et les Whites…
2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay
From the Hautes Côtes. Bottled end of August and, as usual, all screw-cap.
Fine, clean, some fruity ripeness that tends towards pineapple. Hmm – great texture – broad over the palate too. A tiny rigour in the structure then beautifully fading flavours. Very tasty wine!
2022 Nuits St.Georges 1er Les Terres Blanches
As always about 10% pinot blanc in the plantation – the rest all chardonnay. Now racked into tank, harvested quite early – 03 September
A calmer nose but with a hint more width. Extra sweet but also extra direct with great supporting texture too. This is juicy and completely delicious – almost vin dangereux! Serious but not too serious – yum!
