Romaric on 2023 & 2022:
We’re so happy – two full vintages. In 2022 it was clear from the start that it would be great, the grapes were all clean, and hardly any triage was needed. The 2023s were more of a concern as we had lots of challenges and some triage to do too but in the end, we are very satisfied – it exceeded our expectations.

“I like 2022 because it’s quite classic – in the esprit of 2017 but with more concentration – more like 2019. All our wines have been bottled since the end of August. The grapes all were ripe at the same time and there was a lot of them – that helped – probably because of that you don’t sense how warm and dry the vintage was. We have
11 2022s to taste and not a lot has changed at the domaine – we grew the volume for some of the wines as we had the chance to augment with some contract purchases of grapes.

The wines…

A couple of great wines in an otherwise, delicious, consistently excellent range of wines – well done!

All bottled end of August, sampled with use of Coravin:

2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay
From vines in the bottom of Chambolle – Les Gravières
Hmm – a little direct but with a cushioned sweetness and even a few flowers. A little attractive pear fruit flavour, supple, melting and finishing in delicious style.

Les Reds:

2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
80% from the commune of Chambolle the rest from the commune of Vosne. 25% old wood used for this
Also a little direct, slightly cushioned and with hints of flowers – but very red fruit! More mouth-filling and contemplative – velvet texture – the tannin almost with some grain but not drying. Fading very nicely – a lovely finish. Keep 2 years then drink.

2022 Savigny-Lès-Beaune
From Les Ratteuses and, Dessus les Vermots – quite some distance between the two
Wide and perfumed – that’s a beautiful nose – you might guess Chambolle! Hmm, fluid, complex, mobile – lots of complexity but also lots of intensity. A little rasp of finishing tannin – that’s a simply excellent, possibly great villages Savigny – bravo!

2022 Côte de Nuits Villages La Montagne
Two of the best parcels – Retraits and Montagne assembled.
Darker, quite broad. Deeper and darker fruit in the mouth too – lovely dark fruit energy – the tannin is more overt but not really in a fully Nuits vernacular. Super CDNV!

2022 Gevrey-Chambertin
2 parcels again – En Songe and Aux Corvées
Narrower but deeper – silky dark fruit notes, a little cooked impression – but a suggestion of flowers too. Hmm, clean and wide in the mouth though – that’s a lovely representation of darker, more soil-infused Gevrey. Great finishing for a villages too.

2022 Vosne-Romanée
From Chalandins
Airy and fine – a lovely open if not very forward nose – really inviting with plenty of floral perfume. Hmm – proper Vosne over the palate – open, a little structure with a flavour to fall into. This will be excellent – you should wait the standard (for this vintage) 2 years before starting to open your bottles – lovely!

2022 Chambolle-Musigny
Nazoires and Les Clos – the latter on the hill behind Roumier and Mugnier.
The first sniff emphasises the fresh width and depth the second sniff some more airy tones – darker fruit here plus some gooseberry notes. More direct, a texture of velour – plenty of structure – I’d wait just a little longer for this – 3-4 years – but what an impressively intense finish!

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Lavrottes
Only 4 proprietors of this cru, 3 of whom make their own wine. The other side of the road (route des Grands Crus) from Bonnes Mares
The nose hints at florals and is certainly quite airy – almost a fresh melon … Filling the mouth wonderfully well, slightly cushioned but no fat. A super finish – really impressive length. Lovely wine.

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er les Chatelots
‘A small depression in the terroir here that brings a bit more power and warmth in the mouth.’ Middle of the village next to Feuselottes.
A rounder, darker fruit nose with a little cushioned impression. Hmm – considered width, a mm of cushion – but no more! I love the shape of this in the mouth – small bitters bringing energy to the finish. Keep a while it will be worth it!

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Fuées Vieilles-Vignes
A major part of these vines are 75 years old – planted by great-grandfather.
Open, and there’s fresh width – an intensity of darker fruit – only just visible but still obvious. Larger in the mouth – more cool clarity of flavour and quite some architecture to this shape – very open. That will make a very classy bottle – the finish is superb and sustained too. You may have to wait 10 years though!

2022 Clos de Vougeot
Not full open but here’s a really fine and perfumed top note. Mouth-filling with a tiny cushion – mouth-watering with a hint of minerality, wet stone and a blend of red and darker red fruit complexity. A finish that is a width but a finely sustained width – that’s a really lovely wine – and a worthy CV!
