Sophie on 2022:
“For the 2022s nothing has been bottled at this stage – all of that will be done November to Dececember. The vintage volume was certainly better than in 2020 or 2021, but 2022 but is really only a ‘correct’ volume. These 2022s had quite slow malolactic fermentations – but they never stopped and all were finished – otherwise the vintage brought nothing remarkable in the vinification stage.”
The wines…
A simply excellent range of 2022s at this address – very impressive wines.
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Pinot Noir
From Fixin, half could actually be labelled Fixin – nearly 60-year-old vines. Using this label from this vintage.
Large-scale, round with a little chocolate in the mix. Lots of scale and energy, a little reduction too but this is a whole lot of wine for the label – finishing quite mineral – it’s a super Bourgogne!
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles-Vignes
Ten or more parcels included here – a large part from En Songes
Broad, classic, slightly cushioned Gevrey aromas of darker fruit and soil – that’s really lovely. More direct, intense and finer textured – more velour than silk – but really with super depth of flavour. Vibrant finishing. That’s got great finshing dimension – lovely wine.
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Petit Cazetiers
Naddeff have some that they blend, but this the smallest 1er of Gevrey is only bottled as such here.
A rounder, much riper nose. This nose opens with a wonderful floral panorama. More depth to this texture and really beautiful over the palate – I love the flavour of this. Super intense and absolutely delicious Simply excellent!
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
Vinified separately since 2019 as these are young vines.
A smaller but actually quite silky nose. Hmm, direct, velour, juicy – that’s really got a great middle and finshing flavour. It’s lovely!
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Combe aux Moines
About 0.5 hectares, planted in 1954. ‘Never a high yielding plot – a good year is 8 barrels. This neighbours the Petit Cazetiers but with much bigger ‘plates’ of rock.’
A little more intense fruit – this needs some air. Really great scale in the mouth – a wine of structure today that’s going to need some more elevage but the scale and finishing complexity are on a high level – let’s see how the texture settles…
2022 Charmes-Chambertin
Old vines – planted in 1910.
Starting reductive but opening, and becoming silky dark and deep. Hmm broad, depth of complexity, very faintly cushioned. Opening beautifully and with a finishing lightness of touch and perfume – this will be simply excellent – but wait 10 years.
And for the road:
This is finer and more direct in bottle, still dark fruit but very complex. Here is such fine, athletic muscle – what a powerful but energetic wine – here is a lot of class but you will really be enjoying this at it’s best in 15 years- plus! Possibly a great one if you’re patient enough!
