Jean-Luc’s daughter will come to the domaine – Jean-Luc is theoretically retired now – his brother too – “It still needs a lot of energy for the moment,” Says Jean-Luc, “But the transmission to the next generation is underway!

Jean-Luc on 2021:
We had the luck that our vines are on the hillside – the vines in the plain had a lot of mildew, but us not – we did lose 20-25% to frost though – but here there was no hail.

Jean-Luc on 2020:
We are happy. We are consistently around 45 hl/ha and it wasn’t much different in 2020. Harvesting started 22 August and finished in August too but it’s not a record – we started 1 week earlier in 2003! But it’s a year with less than half the rain than average. Not very high alcohols, I stayed about 12.5° – but we are quite high here.

The wines…

Another very fine set of wines chez JLL. In line with the vintages, I had a small preference for his 2019s – but less obviously than at some other domaines.

2020 Beaujolais Villages Blanc Nos 2 Elles
2 parcels in Le Perréon on granite-rose. All tank elevage.
A broad and inviting nose – starting faintly barrel-spiced it seems – but there’s no barrel here. Easy, pure, mobile, fine texture. Mouth-watering with a nice, not too rigorous finishing shape. That’s very good.

2020 Beaujolais Villages Blanc En Verchères
Have made whites here since 1995. This is the name of parcel – half a hectare of vines on volcanic rock with some bluestone. 40-year-old vines. On a vein of blue granite, plain south but high up – over 300m. The malo not done here and 20% barrel elevage.
This nose is a little broader. Supple, mouth-watering – ooh that’s really very lovely. Accented with different fruit – pear, maybe apricot.

2020 Beaujolais Villages Blanc Cuvée Deux Hivers
The same wine as the last but 2 years in demi-muid – to be bottled in a month or two.
Starts toasty, slightly airy. There’s a suggestion of gas here – wider more complex – a little more incisive to start but the gas takes some of that away. A little more grain of tannin. The finish is more vibrantly mineral here – for keeping a little longer. This will be super I think…

Les Reds…

2020 Beaujolais Villages
A vertical nose of high and low tones – very red-fruited. Wide slowly filling the whole mouth, growing in supple mid-palate flavour. Red, juicy fruit in the middle and finishing flavours.

2020 Beaujolais Villages Le Vin des Roches
Partial destemming. Longer maceration – depends on the vintage. 400 m high on granite rose. Bottled just before harvest, not yet commercialized.
A nose that’s deeper and has good width in this depth – red fruit but much darker red – slowly adding more aromatic width. Hmm – I love the start of this – wide, cool, mouth-filling then the wine slowly relaxes over the palate – a small micro-grain of tannin supporting. Slowly fading in the finish, more direct. Modestly mineral. Super…

2020 Beaujolais Villages “Jarre”
First press juice from the previous parcel.
Much less colour. This nose a little more delicate but active and inviting – the nose expands with air showing a lovely extra volume of pure red fruit. More direct, a wine that’s juicy, clean and delicately complex – seemingly more mineral too. Really excellent…
