Gilles on 2021 & 2020:
“2021 was not too bad – but another vintage like that and a few will quit organics – it’s a nice concept in the good weather! But 2020, I’ve never made wines like this. My yield was around 45 hl/ha and it was the dryness that was mainly to blame for this. We made about the same in 2021 but we can’t blame the dryness, that was down to the maladies.”
The wines…
I found super wines but was shocked when he told me the alcohol contents – even questioning my own palate for not noting 14.5° to 17°… “Yes, they were a nightmare to ferment, running slow or stopping – but I’m so impressed with them – I wouldn’t change a thing!”
‘All in DIAM now and I’m very happy:‘
2020 Brouilly Saburin
Bottled since December.
Lots of colour. A small reduction to start – opening with air – Mouth-filling, supple, a really super combination of texture and freshness. The DIAM is affecting the flavour to start – like the nose but 5 minutes of air and all is good. That’s a super and very sophisticated wine, almost juicy finishing too. Very good – perhaps excellent – carafe for now – but no issues in 12 months…
The 3rd vintage at the domaine, and certified Terra Vitis.
A more open nose – one that embraces the senses with attractive red fruit complexity. Also ultra-silky and really wide in this case. Mineral, cool flavour – also decant for now – but this is a great wine with air. Direct and silky – bravo!
The following wines all from tank:
Broader, darker fruit – also the impression of silk from the nose. There’s a presence and a fluidity of flavour here – the wine showing a little extra tannin but a texture of velour – there’s no visible grain. Some finishing bitters offering a counterpoint too. That’s excellent and so persistent – it could also be great.
2020 Morgon
An assembly of parcels.
Dark fruit, narrower but deep. Really a broad impression – mouth-filling, there’s structure but nothing hard – there’s tannin but nothing too drying – a wine with everything except full accessibility today. Wait two years – there is so much here – it’s at least very good…
2020 Fleurie Les Roches
Here the nose is more compact – there’s the ease of the Fleurie Madone but here with darker fruit. More impact and structure than Madone too – but really a fine fruit of clarity, that works through plenty of structure. Cool fruit. That will be very classy wine., As a minimum excellent…
2020 Cuvée d’Exception Equation
More open, wider, oak-inflected aromas but with quite some elegance too. Mouth-filling – again with ultra-fine texture – so mouth-watering, the oak is obvious but I still can’t help myself – this is deliciously moreish. Like an open box of ice-cream – I have to take another spoonful – what an impressive wine – (despite 17°!)
