Julien on 2021:
“Were a little domaine but all is sold. In 2021 we didn’t have much – 2/3rds less – frost and mildew were the main reasons. I could buy a little to offset some of the losses. The wines are lighter in alcohol but fine. ”
Julien on 2020:
“2020 was a complicated year for many reasons but eventually, the sales returned and we are in good shape. As for the wines, I like the 2020s a lot – it’s a very good vintage – though I slightly prefer my 2019s…”
The wines…
As every year, it seems, some great wines from Julien!
2020 Beaujolais-Lantignié Wild Soul
‘Pur Jus’ on the label and cork to indicate that these are bought grapes from friends. All declassified Regnié. Not filtered, 0 free sulfur but about 10 milligrams was added during the vinification
Nice depth to this nose – sleek and silky – slowly widening. Hmm, a little gas for extra freshness – lovely texture – the wine spreading out over the palate. Supple and delicious, holding a fine finish.
2020 Régnié
The lowest-lying vines so the wine with the most maturity.
Also a nice depth – suggesting a little reduction – wider than the Wild Soul. More direct, more incisive – lots of freshness – really a vibrantly flavoured – dynamic wine – so excellent!
Red waxed topped. Still 6 parcels combined for 2.8 ha.
Colder wine – slowly growing in the glass – airy, slowly more floral. Hmm – that’s beautifully sleek, super texture – direct, fluid, melting. Properly shaped Morgon yet not particularly austere. That’s a great wine…
1 ha of Grand Pres at the bottom of Fleurie, the other part from high. All barrel elevage.
Faintly reductive but also there’s a freshness to match the depth – slowly widening and offering more layers of aromatic fruit. The wine with the most mouth-filling scale, really fine and fresh. I love this driving freshness – that’s another really great wine.
