Pierre-Maxime on 2021:
“For us, 2021 wasn’t badly frosted – the local problem was the subsequent hail which hit our St.Véran badly. We have already bottled some as there’s only a modest volume for sale. To compare, 2020 is a more powerful vintage for the reds.”
The wines…
Vineyards that straddle the border of Beaujoais and Mâconnais – some quite good wines here – and in both colours
These reds are about 50% destemmed:
2021 Côteaux Bourguinon
Already bottled.
A modest, airy nose. Nicely fresh, incisive, modestly concentrated but with a good texture. Mouth-water, clean, good wine.
2020 Beaujolais Leynes
Vines exposed to the south, all whole-cluster with a carbonic maceration
Fresh, wider but still a little tight in the depth. Mouth-filling, subtly tannic but with a relaxed and mouth-watering middle and finishing flavour. That finishes in fine fashion – it’s very tasty.
2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Vines in Leynes, planted in 2015
More colour – that’s a larger more open nose. Hmm – that’s rather good. Really wide, decently textured – here with 100% barrel elevage – supple and quite nicely energetic too. Slowly fading. That’s a good wine too.
2020 St.Amour A la Folie
4.5 hectares of vines on this large south-facing hillside
A deep nose, modestly reductive – but there’s plenty of material here. Yes, a little reduction but also with a very nice combination of texture and concentration. A little more sucrosity here than the Bourgogne.
2020 St Amour Clos de Chapitre
Just over the road from the previous wine, here with a bit less de-stemming. Similar stony terroir to the last with only a modest slope.
Again a little reductive but here’s a hint of florals too. More open and mouth-filling. The texture is modestly accented by the tannin but there’s absolutely no grain here. Very sophisticated texture – that’s very good.
2021 Côteaux Bourguignone Rosé
All gamay
Fresh, mineral nose. Nicely incisive with a little richness of concentration and texture. That’s, clean, elegant and delicious it’s just a little aromatically tight today – if that opens a little more I’d say excellent!
Les whites…
DIAM type seals used here:
2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay
A deep nose, almost a little muscaté and mineral. Mouth-filling, round, initially not so special but then comes a delicious finish with lots of citrus energy – it’s really tasty here.
2020 Saint-Véran Vieilles-Vignes
A nice aromatic freshness – tighter in the depth. Nicely direct and mineral, mouth-watering, slightly saline. That’s a big wave of finishing flavour. Very tasty wine.
2020 Saint-Véran Les Cornillaux
A little extra sweetness to this nose. Extra freshness and mouth-watering interest here too. Lovely energy, slightly mineral but with lots of interesting complexity. Long and quite wide finishing. That’s another very good, and very tasty wine.
2020 Saint-Véran Bois de Fée
A fine depth of aroma again. Extra mineral and fresh, quite citrussy. That’s quite the most delicious of all these – that’s excellent.
2020 Saint-Véran ‘Maceration’
Much deeper colour. A silky, fatter nose of wax and honey. Great shape and presence in the mouth – extra depth of flavour and a little more agrume, citrus bitters. Holding a fine depth of finishing flavour too. That’s very good again. A finishing texture of modest tannin…
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay.
A more open freshness – like the Côteaux, bottled in January. Also a slightly rigorous minerality. Finely mineral, good energy. I like the finishing flavour – there’s nicely mouth-watering citrus here.
No sulfur. All chardonnay.
That’s a nicely fresh and open nose – very pretty. Hmm – that’s lovely – not sweet. Nicely direct – beautifully citrus mouth-watering – that’s great – bravo!
