Philippe on 2020:
2020 wasn’t a great rendement due to the heat -and we won’t talk about 2021 and rendements! I think I will try to buy some organic grapes to augment my production this year – but I’m not the only one who needs more volume.

The wines…

Another very good set of wines from Philippe…

2020 Beaujolais Villages
Bottled in June, vines at 500m, a shorter maceration period that was done in 2020 ‘to bring the fruit even more forward.’
A nice width of aroma with a faintly herbed freshness. This is bright and pure – there’s a nice direction to the wine’s flavours too. There’s a little herby style that reflects the nose but it’s simply a very tasty wine – more than good – the finish is really lovely.

2020 Regnié Haute Ronze Mosaïque
A mix of parcels with various altitudes – one of which is from 90-year-old vines which did indeed have a higher maturity than the others – a longer maceration and 10 months in amphora – sandstone – plus some tank too. This a co-vinification of all the parcels in Hautes Ronze.
A wider nose, rounder with an almost textured impression here. Incisive, very nicely structured – there’s freshness of flavour to match the incisive character. Extra purity of finishing flavour – that’s really an excellent wine, slowly fading in the finish.

And a new cuvée:

2020 Fleurie Poncié
Just behind the chateau on a very sandy soil.
My first impression is an accent of creamy barrel – ‘I needed a container for a smaller amount and didn’t want something ‘banal’ so chose a 500-litre barrel from a good source but yes it did mark things a little – the rest was in stainless steel.‘ A nicely sensuous style and texture to this wine – mouth-watering in fine style. The barrel will take a year or two to fade but the combination of acid intensity (energy) and, rounder, fine texture still carries the wine very well. The quality is excellent again – just note the barrel – which is visible in a little reprise of this long finish…
