Audrey & Thibault on 2021 & 2020:
“2021 was a good harvest here – no frost and not too much mildew – we did okay – the weather was quite good leading up to the vintage – which is good as there was a lot less sun before that!
“2020 was a small vintage – we thought, in July, that we were going to have a super harvest because we had plenty of grapes but then we had no rain – so not much juice – the maturity was more by concentration than real ripeness, perhaps, but with high sugars – so in the end, it was only about half a harvest.”
The wines…
Great Beaujolais here in 2020 – no question. All new labels here too – they are much nicer I think!
2020 Beaujolais Blanc Authentique
All 225 and 228-litre barrels. There’s was not much more than 1,000 bottles of this
Fresh wide, only a modest accent of barrel. Wide and melting over the palate, quite creamy oaky flavour today but with a nice line of minerality in the flavour.
Les Rouges:
Beaujolais on the back label.
Plenty of colour. That’s an attractive, dark fruit and modest spice. Concentration – wow – this is hyper impressive and not too much in the way of excess – keep this in the cellar but it will be great BJ – it tastes so much more impressively than last year!
2020 Beaujolais Côteaux du Razet Vieilles-Vignes
Again Beaujolais on the back label. Older vines on a hillside – classic fermented, semi-carbonic with whole clusters.
A finer width but no less dark fruit in support. Broader on the palate and showing the structure a little more – extra layers of flavour but less complete in terms of the overall effect vs the last today – also for keeping and I’m absolutely sure it’s going to get better and better…
Over 60-year-old vines – a parcel selection. This bottled, like the white in November – the previous wines were done in March.
Airy, fine, a super and finely complex nose – but with some power below, of course. Super texture and concentration too. The fruit needs to calm a little but this is a bottle for drinking in 5 or more years. That’s great BJ!
