Raphäel on 2020 & 2021:
I have a good year in 2020; it’s the first time, apart from a little to friend, that I haven’t sold wine in bulk. I had only 30 hl/ha in 2021 but that was not bad compared to some other producers and is balanced by what I had in 2020. I had a bit of oïdium in the whites in 2020 and in 2021 – but it was harder to control in 2021 – but some essential (orange) oils helped a lot. I lost maybe 30% of my 2021 harvest in Morgon with the black rot – it was the humidity of the year that caused the growth of this, I think. I also think it could have been carnage if I’d had higher yields in 2021 as I’ve tasted some very meagre wines from those with more like 40-50 hl/ha.

The wines…

Always wines of class chez Raphaël.

2020 Beaujolais-Lantignié La Savoye
That’s a lovely nose – it’s pure and open – very attractive. Hmm, that has a slowly widening, mouth-watering freshness – mineral too, more accented by the dark fruit but it brings just enough sucrosity and extra interest to bring balance and a little finesse too – delicious!

2020 Regnié La Ronze
A nose that opens very well – becoming purer and purer and ever-more inviting. Wide, melting over the palate, super texture – a little behind the great 2019 – but really only a little. Completely delicious and with good structure too – this will last and last in your cellar.

2020 Morgon Les Charmes
Extra depth of aroma here – but still pure, darker, fruit – a touch floral too. Hmm, more direct, more structural – proper Morgon – indeed juicy Morgon. For keeping – probably 3 years for the first test. Strict and proper – a super finish!

2020 Régnié Les Braves
‘A nice south exposure.’ Sampled from tank
Dark – open and pure – more floral than the Ronze. Super in the mouth – lots of volume but a more perfumed flavour profile and less strict than either of the last – concentrated yet elegant. An excellent wine.

2020 Morgon Archambault
A nose of redder fruit, here framed with floral and barrel notes. Really silky, long, saline. Still structured but never too strict – the oak is forward today though.

2020 Gaïa
Gamaret 70%, gamay for the rest. Not bottled of course.
A fine and pure width of fruit aroma – I love the clarity here. Mouth-filling with clarity of flavour – a small accent of barrel in the flavours. But here is a wine of fine fluidity and mouth-watering, melting flavour. That’s a great wine in waiting.

For the road:

2017 Regnié Caprice
Elegant red fruit. Mouth-filling, here is plenty of volume and a little structure to match but the tannin has largely melted away – just an ultra-fine grain without dryness remains. A subtle accent of barrel but that’s really in the background now. Lovely, the tannin only really showing on the tip of the tongue in the finish.…
