Fabien on 2021
There’s a first bottling of the Chiroubles in 21 but there will also be a later one. A vintage with a small quantity – it was the frost more than maladies which were to blame. Normally we don’t have frost on the hill here but it was just one night with a little snow too – in the end with the secondary buds we lost ‘only’ about 30%. But there was plenty of work in the vines too – not an easy warm year – fortunately, the weather was good around flowering or it would have been a lot worse. We also had three weeks of lovely weather leading up to the harvest, which made things more comfortable.

Fabien on 2020
2020 was a year that was a dream; quantity, quality, good degrees – hardly anything to triage – some rain that came at a good moment that helped freshen up the grapes. I was really happy. 18 and 20 are really great vintages here – the 19s a bit more classic Beaujolais.

The wines…

Another fine demonstration of sustained quality at this domaine…

2021 Chiroubles l’Aurore des Côtes
Not super-deep colour. A nose of freshness that slowly grows with darker-red berry fruit. Supple, airy but with a fine combination of concentration and mouth-watering style. Delicious and a little mix of juiciness and modest tannin to finish – almost some enlivening bitters. Modest for this cuvée here, despite how tasty it is!

2020 Chiroubles
A broader nose, yet tighter for the fruit. This has a lovely shape in the mouth, sleek, fluid flavour profile, waves of fine, mouth-watering flavour that spread out from the core. Supple and very, very tasty. That’s excellent wine with some fine finishing bitters too.

2018 Chiroubles
That’s a much deeper nose – lots of dark fruit – certainly a maturity but not a cooked nose. Hmm – that’s much wider, a little more tannic – lots of energy. Showing less of the fleshiness of fruit today but full of energy and tasty complexity. That’s also excellent and very long just a different style today…

2020 Morgon Vieilles-Vignes
Airy, silky, a little floral – that’s a really inviting nose. Wide, slowly more mouth-filling. Very fine – ultra-fine-grained tannin. Very sophisticated. Beautifully sophisticated over the palate. That’s really a super wine.

2019 Morgon Vieilles-Vignes
Here the nose is a little broader and more energetic/athletic. Also beautifully textured – a sleek, direct wine, mouth-watering waves of flavour washing over the palate – the fluid style that I personally prize. Ultra-fine grained with tannin again. I think a great wine – such class!

2018 Morgon Vieilles-Vignes
A nose with more impact – lots of dark, slightly roast fruit. Mouth-filling, the dark fruit of the nose, a little extra spiced too. Probably the most complex of these three, the tannic grain showing a little more but completely ripe. My personal style preference is very easily with the 2019 but this is excellent wine, maybe even better than that!
