Charlotte on 2021:
“2021 was really poor from the perspective of quantity – everything around the domaine was frosted. We have 10 hectares in Chénas and 70% was frosted; we had leaves, lots of leaves, but no grapes. There’s not the material in the wines that we have in 2020 but they are looking very tasty wines. We stayed organic but treatments were nearly every 4 days at one stage.”
Charlotte on 2020:
“2020 was a bit easier but we had, of course, the dryness, which meant only 35 hl/ha average which is about 20-25% lower than our target. But we like the wines and they have a lovely maturity.”
The wines…
As usual, very high quality from this domaine – and a few wines that are worth a special search. Well-done!
2020 St.Amour Côte de Besset
The most on altitude – 2.65 ha in Bousset lieu-dit top left.
Hmm – that’s a nicely perfumed dark fruit with a violet accent. Open, a good concentration but with an airy style so that all is accessible. That’s a really delicious wine with just a little extra minerality in the finishing flavours. Super.
2020 Juliénas Vieilles-Vignes
There are about 10 different parcels in this – the historic home of the family – Croix Rouge and Capitains are the main sources though.
Fine aromatic width, a little redder fruit, faintly accented with some graphite minerality. Extra concentration – wider panorama of favour – intensity here too – this is excellent wine – open and mobile fresh flavour. Give it 18-24 months but this is excellent and vibrant in the finish.
2020 Chénas Chat au Bonnet Rouge
‘The most supple and fruity of our Chenas – about 40-year-old vines.’ This bottled august the previous two in November.
This starts a bit tighter but opens well in the glass. Rounder but with freshness to the fruit. Hmm – that’s nicely complex, more saline and with a lovely freshness – directly more accessible than the last though still a baby. Also nicely mouth-watering.
More elevage and a little more extraction during fermentation. All the vines around the château – effectively a monopole. Harvested a bit later than the last wine and use grill during fermentation for about a dozen days with a daily remontage. Bottling planned for April.
Hmm – that’s a beautiful nose, finely complex and with flowers too – blind I would say MaV. A little gas today. But this widens over the palate; open, fluid, just a hint of dryness from the tannin but without grain. This is top. Bravo. Wait 2 years also!
Wow – that’s a great, vibrant, darker-fruited, beautiful nose – I might buy this wine just to smell it. A bit of gas again – it’s still waiting for the bottling. Perfumed flavour, redolent of the nose. Open flavour, almost easier than The previous wine – but mobile, pure, clean – hyper-attractive – bravo again and hold in a super width of finishing.
2020 Moulin à Vent Chien de Garde
From the commune of Chénas, low down on granite. This is still in barrel.
More direct – lovely but certainly less expansive today than the last two wines – a framing of the aromas with some barrel. Ultra-silky, great width too. There’s a lot of class here – the middle and finishing flavours really arriving in waves. Sophisticated texture and mouth-wateringly delicious – excellent wine.
Les White:
2020 Beaujolais Villages Blanc En Perelle
The other white – Chat au Bonnet – with all tank elevage is a victim of its own success as it’s sold out but there’s still this:
Rather oaked and a little creamy nose but still with a little vibration of fruit. The aftertaste is really quite vibrant and wide with a good minerality. That’s a nice finish but still an oaky wine.
