Jeanne on 2021 and 2020:
“Ah, we’ve had worse – it was, maybe, 60% of a normal harvest. Lots of rain but only really some frost on the ‘Droit de Veto’ wine. The 2021s are so deliciously easy and fruity – of course they are not yet bottled – but we ask ourselves if we should put them on the market before the 2020s! We’re currently commercialising 2018 and the 2019s so the 2020s are, by comparison, a balanced, calmer vintage with more volume. I think we enjoyed the time of confinement – in the vines – but there was a bit more stress at harvest time as you don’t really know, as well, the people that are harvesting with you. But we like the wines we made!”
The wines…
Really a tip-top range in 2020.
All the wines had been bottled – the Morgon quite recently – in November:
2020 Fleurie La Madone
Will make some small changes to the label as the vines were Jeanne’s grandfather’s who passed away a year ago. – But this is not yet finalised.
That’s a nicely floral nose – slightly airy. Open, slowly mouth-watering. A wine that keeps widening over the palate. Finishing with a burst of more, and quite juicy finishing. Keep it back a couple of years but this is a wine with a nice structure and purity.
Fleurie from then Marrans sector
There’s more weight – if not power to this nose – a little extra attractive cushioning – that’s really lovely. Supple, airy but still concentrated. Here is a wine of fine fluidity and easy, fine-textured delivery – I think it more than excellent. So fine finishing too! Bravo…
Three terroirs with separate elevage.
That’s also a lovely nose – smaller but almost finer than the last. Again a slightly direct style – it’s Morgon after all – but the fluidity of the last is present here too. Very mouth-watering, perfumed flavour. Not a classically structural Morgon yet a properly ‘shaped’ Morgon. I love the finish too. Properly complex, slightly saline finishing. Bravo!
