Philippe on 2022:
“I’m very happy with this most recent harvest – and for both red and white. We had a little hail in some places but the rest was a very good season – also for the volume in Gevrey, Morey and Chambolle.
“In 2018 and 2019 we made some wine but not in 2020 and 2021 – so I was happy to have some volume. The Bourgogne we start with will be bottled at the start of next year.”
The wines…
A lot of very good wines – the grand crus are properly great and many of them are worth a special search!
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
Clean, airy width and nice fruit. Ooh – delicious wine – narrow but juicy and with very good texture. Simply a lovely wine.
2022 Marsannay Es Chezots
‘Not yet racked so there’s a small reduction’
Nice shape in the mouth with an airy but attractive style that’s more intense in the finish – not showing its best but it’s mouth-watering with fine texture – actually, this is lovely finishing…
2022 Marsannay Mont Chenevoy
From the north of the appellation near Clos du Roy
Larger aromatic scale. Rounder in the mouth with more depth to the flavour but also a small reduction. Juicy again with more concentration and a very silky texture – that’s lovely – beautifully finishing wine!
2022 Fixin Entre Deux Velles
Near the 1ers of arvelets, and hervelets
Cleaner, more direct, this has a very pure nose – it’s lovely. A small reduction again but broad and more sinuous in shape. Beautifully juicy and finishing absolutely delicious.
2022 Pernand-Vergelesses
3-4 parcels blended.
Less open but still airy in style. Fluid, and quite mouth-filling a small oaky component today that whilst attractive will fade – wait 2 years for that. The finish properly persistent but with a bit more oak.
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Terres Blanches
Good clean freshness of aroma here. Direct, quite mineral, wiry wine – direct but slowly melting with middle flavour. The finish is a beauty – I love this almost chalky finishing flavour.
2022 Chambolle-Musigny
Airy, slightly floral – just as it should be! Silky, and certainly with more width over the palate than the chalky Gevrey. A small cushion in the middle then fading with pretty flavour. Very lovely!
2022 Morey St.Denis
A more vertical nose – plenty of energy in the high tones. A texture of velour with melting flavour. Pretty red, complex, fruit flavour in a lovely finish – really delicious finishing.
2022 Vosne-Romanée
More open and perhaps with a small grain of spice aroma. On the palate too a wine of breadth, here with a more visible grain of tannin – then luxuriously finishing, spreading out over the palate – with the best finishing flavour yet – more than delicious – give it 2-3 years for the first part of the wine to become more generous.
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles-Vignes
A smaller nose almost showing a little rose perfume. I sense the rose again in the flavours – larger scale and with tons of complexity – simply excellent Gevrey but wait 3+ years!
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles
A more spiced width of aroma – less depth. Vibrant, the flavour starting direct but it broadens over the palate. Becoming juicy – but don’t underestimate the structure here – wait 3 years again…
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Belair
Some extra creaminess to this larger nose. Direct, cool, then broad – I love the brilliant shape and mouth-watering style of this but the oak is very creamy today – possibly better to wait more than 3 years for this but the wine is a beauty!
2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er En Orveaux
This used to be blended in his Vosne villages
A little extra impact from this nose – very pretty fruit here. Broad – really panoramic, finely grained, and wonderfully finishing in quite floral style. A super finish!
2021 Clos de Vougeot
South of the Clos, 0.41 ha from road to about 300m higher – long rows to Grand Maupertuis.
This nose has depth but isn’t quite ready yet. In the mouth there is certainly some extra depth – for both the flavour and the structure! Creamy again today – but such a lovely finish – give it time – 5+ years!
2020 Charmes-Chambertin
2 parcels blended; Mazoyeres and Charmes, each of similar surface and vine age.
A fresher width of aroma. More incisive but still of cool width – this grows in the mouth to fill all the spaces. Another really great finish – this are rather good wines!!!
Very expressive width of aroma – faintly wc floral. Fluid to balance the concentration – wonderful texture – that’s going to be a great wine – bravo!
Chambolle side – all terres blanc near de Vogué
Still a width of aroma – but calmer. Larger in the mouth – super texture of velvet – then a fabulous finish again – these wines are a little serious to start today but they are all finishing with class – this is potentially a great wine too – this has the most delicious finish yet!
A very bright width of aroma – some boiled sweet complexity here. This is properly mineral and quite direct in style. Beautiful fruit but I wasn’t expecting that minerality – really great differentiated characters in ths cellar in 22!
2022 Mazis-Chambertin
Broader, almost textured – fine red fruits. More mouth-filling, layers of flavour easing over the palate – almost juicy – but still balanced – practically fluid wine. Super length in this finish – just so persistent. More visibility to the structure vs the previous wines but achingly long. Super Mazis…
5 ouvrées on original roots – from Marsannay Champs Forets sand and limestone soil.
Rather broad and open – that’s impressive! Very silky, sinuous wine, that follows the Mazis with ease! Beautifully finishing too. Great Bourgogne if you can find it!
Larger aromatic scale. Direct, then widening – filling all available space. Great texture and the greatest finish – there’s just so much volume and persistence – and did I mention? It’s also delicious. It will be a great wine!
