Julien on 2022:
“I had a bit of hail in the mid-slope in Morgon but I still managed 38 hl/ha and even managed to buy a some organic grapes! I think the wines could really be as good as in 2019 – I do very little intervention – there are no faults – that I’ve noted. I’m quietly confident.”
Julien on 2021:
“I have some places that are very susceptible to mildew – this is where I lost the most. Some other places with a bit of frost too – yet in others I had 45 hl/ha. That said, my average was ‘only’ 25 hl/ha. It was a year that was easy to vinify – but less easy to choose what to vinify – the triage was not easy. I have a tendency the destem when it’s very mature but these 21s were all whole-clusters because of the carbonic approach, the juice is practically never in contact with the stems…”
Julien is building some new cuverie-space at his home – it should be ready for his 2023 harvest.
The wines…
A super vintage here chez Julien – he had some stress through the growing (and triage!) season but the wines are pure, nicely structured and beautifully energetic. Wines to drink, with pleasure…
2021 Régnié
The lowest-lying vines. Part foudre and part 228-litres – 10-15 years old. All the clusters, not filtered and a 10mg addition of sulfur for the bottling
A roundness of red fruit – very attractive. In the mouth this is full but open, growing juicier and framed with a small grain of tannin. Finishing well – this is a super wine – just far too easy to drink…
2021 Fleurie
1 ha of Grand Pres at the bottom of Fleurie, the other part from high. All barrel elevage. ‘This year (22) I bought some grapes from a well-known producer – which I vinified here.’
The first nose has a faint reduction – becoming more floral and perfumed with air. Hmm – more vibrant and energetic, more direct and juicy too – lovely energy – red-fruited energy – nicely intense – a super finish. The acidity is more visible here but deliciously so…
2021 Morgon
Red waxed topped. Still 6 parcels combined for 2.8 ha – but have recently bought some organic grapes from half a hectare of vines from a vigneron in St.Joseph
A width of floral perfume- the depth also with some reduction but much more subtle than the start of the Fleurie. A super width of red-fruit intensity and vibrant energy. Faintly grained, fading with perfume holding. Simply excellent wine again
