Antoine on 2022:
“A very early harvest start – 24 August – but all the wines were around 12° ”
Antoine on 2021:
“10k fewer bottles last year – a 40% drop with 20 hl/ha – it wasn’t the frost that was responsible, just the rain, rain and more rain – I almost couldn’t treat due how wet it was in the vines. It’s a vintage that could be a little green so I didn’t play around with it – not too long cuvaisons – you could say I made lite wines.”
The wines…
Another fine result from Antoine – look out for his Montmeronts!
2021 Régnié
This cuvée was half sand and alluvial but in 2022 is just the sand part – I’ve gained fruit and purity.
Silky red fruit nose. Hmm, a wine that’s nicely structured – open but still with good concentration. Pretty small complexities and long finishing.
2021 Morgon
This has been an organic plot for about 15 years – all old vines. It’s alluvial soil near Grand Cras, quite a light soil despite some small amount of clay. 90% barrel elevage in this case – ‘I didn’t want to leave any barrels empty’
Less open, still a width of silk. Hmm, that’s lovely – nothing overt from the barrels other than a slight rounding of the edges – delicious, slight sucrosity and acid energy – a touch of chalky texture to this finish. I think this is excellent.
This a cuvée here since 2018 – in 2017 it was 85% lost to the hail. Before this was an acacia forest but about 60 years ago it was planted. Very granitic with big rocks that had to be pulled out for planting. Montmeronts is the parcel name. This and the previous bottled in June.
A broader nose – still not widely open. Ooh – that’s got great energy – a dynamic wine – in the middle and finishing flavours there is an accent from the barrels but really not strong and it will be almost gone in 6 months more. Today it’s just a nose short of being a great wine…
2020(!) Régnié Montmeronts
What colour! The nose starts tight – slowly growing with some darker fruit and eventually with perfume. Large scale, more saline – much more concentrated – growing in power and intensity – a super glass but I might not want to take more than 2 glasses today – the energy here will certainly support the second glass though!
