One of the characters of Beaune is Bernie Repolt of this domaine – it seems he’s been unwell for a time – so I pass on my best wishes for a speedier recovery for him…

Claudie on 2020:
In 2020 we can be happy – it was confusing to start as we struggled to follow the maturity but we finished with good degrees of ripeness but also lots of acidity – this is the esprit of the vintage – some things are exceptional. Right now, nothing in bottle – we will start the process in January.

The wines…

A whole bunch of very fines wines and a few really great ones too – not always from the expected appellations. Goodjob!

2020 Santenay 1er Graand Clos Rousseau
Silky dark fruit – that’s just so attractive. Dark fruit palate too; airy, energetic, layered beautifully mouthwatering. Great first wine!

2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Serpentières
Very similar fruit but with an extra width to the aroma. More direct, cooler fruit, layered and completely delicious gain – slightly cushioned texture.

2020 Beaune 1er Grèves
Domaine vines
The nose is fine – really fine adding some floral tomes – engaging without being flashy. Higher toned perfume in the mouth too – that’s really a beautiful wine, complex, perfumed but with a (largely) hidden backbone – bravo!

2020 Beaune 1er Les Teurons
The old Domaine Germain vines.
The nose starting with a faint reduction. More silky, complex, reductive – but the shape is beautiful, as is the texture. I expect excellent wine here the slowly mouthwatering finish is delicious.

2020 Nuits St.Georges
A blend of two parcels with separate elevage, both on the Vosne side
Not a large nose but a very elegant one. Some darker fruit and a fine shape to this – open, mobile, growing with even more flavour in the middle and finish. That’s a really lovely wine – simply excellent – you could mistake it for Vosne such is the elegance.

2020 Domaine Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cazetiers
Higher toned, more direct, slightly reductive again. Very direct, cool fruit, fluid – this has the chance to be great wine – no fat, this is a racehorse. It just needs to lose that reductive edge. Beautiful black fruit in the finish – clarity and width here – it just keeps getting better and better!
2020 Clos de Vougeot
Airy and floral – top! Also pure and direct, cool-fruited, but here with a little more concentration but tension too. Gorgeous wine, beautifully textured. Bravo just a little bit more in every direction vs the Cazetiers!

2020 Charmes-Chambertin
Domaine and very old vines, 70-80-years-old.
The nose starts with a little less purity but certainly more width – adding more clarity with air. Lovely shape in the mouth – cool fruit – more a width of flavour than direct, the flavour with a stronger accent of barrel – but still modest. This is very good and the texture is great.

Les Whites:

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé
A long contract, from 2021 there’s an additional one with some 1er cru
Broad and very attractively aromatic. Mouth-filling, classy, mineral – very open with pure, tasty flavours. That’s simply excellent!

2020 Beaune St.Desirée Blanc
A broad nose with almost a flinty smoky impression. Airy, pure, a little saline – this has fine fluidity. That’s rather excellent.

2020 Meursault
Lots of parcels assembled – a mix of domaine (actually parcels where they do all the work) and contracts.
Here’s an impressive first wave of ripe but classy fruit. Round, actually more mineral than I was expecting from the nose. Layered, and fine. This is a very classy wine.

2020 Santenay 1er Gravières Blanc
Not domaine but do all the work, including the harvesting
There’s some mineral depth here, but essentially this is a more airy aromatic. Wide, impressive, with lovely energy. Really fine intensity but never sharp. Melting and mineral. Top Santenay!

2020 Corton-Charlemagne
Part domaine and part grape purchases.
Fresh, chalky, pure – not the biggest nose but a fine one! Mineral, with a sort of ease to the structure as it slowly melts over the palate. Fine bitters and tons of complexity. It’s precise but I just have the feeling that I’d like the structure to show a bit more – a hint more rigour – the flavour melts ‘too easily’ over the palate – possibly it will gain as it has another month of elevage but it’s without question excellent, correct, Charlemagne. It’s really long…

2020 Montrachet
Fuller, more acacia floral – impressive stuff! A little softness, like the Charlemagne, but really that’s when this wine takes its coat off and starts to dance – so complex, round but mobile, a wine with everything. Simply excellent again.

2020 Chablis Bougros
Brought to Beaune as must, vinified in 350-l barrels
More direct aromatics – I’d say ‘proper.’ This is not ridiculous following the Montrachet as the flavours have a different register. The wine is mineral, direct, of beautiful texture – less round than, and less encompassing than, the Montrachet, but still broad in the middle and finish and perhaps today with more (certainly different) definition. Bravo – and completely delicious finishing!
