Jérémy on 2020:
I have some new wines from Pernand-Vergelesses and all were bottled just before the harvest – there are some bubbles too but none here to taste today. Unfortunately, I’ve no Hautes Côtes in 2020 but I have in 2021 and I’m happy with it – directly south-facing vines below the Abbaye of St.Vivant. 20 is my first vintage too with Aligoté – at least from own vines. I thought the stems a little less ripe than in 2019 so I still used some, but fewer in 2020. I find the wines dense, nice, fresh and with tension – it’s a good year but it’s clearly still a year of sunshine. No added sulfur for the reds and the aligoté – the other whites had some just after the malo…

The wines…

A very good showing – but watch out for some of the reds if you are sensitive to pyrazines…

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Les Essards
Same as last year, near Corgoloin
Hmm, a bright and vibrant nose, maybe a suggestion of pyrazine but not totally overt. Direct, silky, growing in intensity. Some licorice in this fresh length. No pyrazine noted in the flavours, graphite minerality length – that’s really long. A super wine to start with.

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Creux Brouillard
Next to Les Crais
That’s a really lovely nose – wc-perfumed. Wider but still with energy bringing you forward. Vibrant and fresh – ‘only 12.7°’ – there seems plenty of acidity but this is still a very tasty wine. Really super!

2020 Fixin 1er Les Hervelets
High-toned, fresh and energetic – perfumed for sure, maybe a hint of pyrazine again. Yes, pyrazine in the flavours too – but floral/gentian complex. Super finishing complexity – here it’s very attractive. The finish is long and satisfying…

Les whites:

2020 Bourgogne Aligoté
Fermented on skins in ceramic, no sulfur. Has gone back to a direct press for the 2021 version.
Green skins, herbed, maybe a little onion but there’s reduction too. Hmm – that’s got a beautiful texture and shape in the mouth. Wide and interesting as opposed to delicious today.

2020 St.Romain
Le Village and Le Jarrons assembled – probably not bottled until well into 2021. Perhaps this the only wine with DIAM
Ooh – that’s got a beautiful line of aroma – citrus, some lime. Wide, silken, some lime citrus again, really mouth-watering. Delicious, moreish, subtly long. Simply excellent wine.

2020 Pernand-Vergelesses
Opposite 1er En Caradeux
Wider, fuller, a little reductive, some oak in this too – a more spiced style. Vibrantly mineral, still a bit reductive but with waves of mouth-watering flavour. More zesty bitters in the finish. This could be very good but carafe if you’re planning to drink in the first couple of years…

2020 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er En Caradeux
This nose is much more in place – open, ripe yellow lemon freshness – a fine invitation. More mouth-filling, more overt energy – a faint grain of tannin framing these mouth-watering flavours. The flavour in the middle coming in successive citrus waves. Really impressive persistence in the finish. That’s a fine finish. This is a very good wine.

And for the road:

2018 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits
The first vintage for all the reds – no added sulfur
Full complex, energetic wine – I feel the aromatic softening due to the lack of sulfur. Surprisingly in the mouth (for me) here is a super shape, a super construction – architectural structure, lots of fine and proper flavour. Darkly mineral finishing, a very tasty wine – great in parts!
