Alix on 2021 & 2020:
Of course, 2021 was frosted. We lost about thirty percent of our production, but the overall yield wasn’t bad – we actually did a little better than in 2020!
For us, 2020 was a very sunny vintage but one that has still delivered wines with plenty of acidity. We used only remontages – no pigeages – in this vintage too, as the colour extraction was unbelievable. I would say that I like the wines better than 2018 which tends in the direction of 2009 and 2003.

The wines…

A strong set of wines from Alix and Jean-Marc, there is much to like here, including a couple of great grand crus…

2020 Bourgogne Aligoté
No sulfur and some skin maceration with jar elevage. Bottled. The vines are in Comblanchien – been making this since 2017, before that it was sold in bulk.
A green skin nose that is quite inviting. Nice shape and intensity, green skins impression with a saline length – thats really tasty.

2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
To be bottled next week. In Les Vignottes 1.3 ha of vines opposite the Clos de la Marechale.
A big nose, aromatic and smoky. Fresh and slightly muscled with lots of dark fruit. Thats an impressive start!

2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune
3 parcels; Dessus les Vermots, Au Fourches and Gollardes
Again, very aromatic, faintly grained wine. But with bubbling energy and impressive length. Tasty wine thats impressively long.

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Vieilles-Vignes
70-80-year-old vines. The highest degree with 14.8° and it was also the first harvested.
More intense a weight of, still, fresh aroma. Cool fruit showing a hint of wood spice. Muscular, mobile but not fat. Impressive length with lots of dry extract.

The previous wines tasted from tank, now from barrel samples:

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Au Fauques
In Comblanchien, 2 ha, a mix of older and younger vines.
Impressive colour – like all. Again the smoky, aromatic style of the domaine this year. Extra depth and comfort to the texture – that’s really very impressive. Top!

2020 Vosne-Romanée
Two parcels; Hautes Maizières and Violettes
Almost a silkier nose, wide, elegant, less aromatic than some of the previous. Vibrant, the aromatics remain in the mouth, super depth and texture. Vibrant finishing – a super finish!

2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Suchots
Near Cathiard on the bottom side of the road, heading in the direction of Echézeaux
Oh yes – here is a nose – such tempting depth! There’s a bit of oak but it doesn’t distract from the layered deliciousness of this wine. Beautifully treading the line between concentration and elegance. That’s excellent!

2020 Echézeaux
From three climats blended together
A fuller nose of width – higher notes with fine purity. A wine with a little more structure but fully wrapped in the fruit. The tannin faintly visible in this case but the finish has an extra kirsh and menthol complexity.

2020 Echezeaux du Dessus
Vines from 49…
Darker more direct aromas. Vibrant, fresher, the depth is freshly layered – a very different in style – a similar grain of tannin but this is a more structural style – not quite clos de vougeot but in that direction vs the last… Lovely…

2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Maupertuis
High in the clos
A fuller nose, suggesting some reduction before soaring with fresh perfume. Direct, vibrant flavour, modestly grained but no dryness. Wide – I love this! A strong finishing wine too…
2020 Grands-Echézeaux
Next to the Clos de Vougeot, and the neighbouring vines are DRC.
Not the largest nose but round and cushioned and also very inviting. This sits beautifully in the mouth, the tannic grain more visible but never drying and indeed fading as you head through towards the finish. Vibrantly finishing. A beauty.

And to finish:

2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Les Vaucrains sans souffre
The cuvee with whole clusters and no sulfur from next to Clos de la Marechale – bottled in June.
Aromatic, different, some floral extras. A little gas, a structure that rubs around the gums but with no grain. Layered and completely delicious finishing. Love this!
