Caroline on 2020:
In the vines all was really easy, certainly from the perspective of treatments and access but also despite the complications due to the dryness. In the end, a very correct yield with really great grapes – we can say that it was a very good vintage – the maturity in the grapes was super. It was hot during the harvest but the nights were still cool. We started picking 20 August and harvested over three, weeks. I think it’s a nicely classic vintage with lots of differences between the wines. The wines are all bottled but the final ones were only done in the last couple of weeks, after racking in April-May.

The wines…

A great sett of wines presented!

2020 Mâcon-Prissé
A round nose but still showing width and balance – it’s inviting. Ooh – that’s a lovely, vibrant, wine. Really mouth-watering and very faintly saline, indeed really mouth-watering – almost juicy and zesty – that’s really a top wine! Just the nose needs to become more interesting to be great…

2020 Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine
Higher altitude vines here, always later harvested.
More depth of aroma – plenty of citrus skin complexity here too. More volume in the mouth – a lot more agrume in style – not the same focus as the last today but more complexity of flavour. The finish has waves of fine interest – delicious…

2020 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette
Northern vines, south-facing so more ‘solaire’ vs the Lamartine, a little more clay in the soil though. It may be sunnier here nearer the Saone but the extra wind up here balances it out!
Hmm – that’s got a lovely citrus purity – a suggestion of oak in the mix too. Extra fresh, this is Dominique’s southern Mersault-Perrieres! – so juicy. Give this a little time to settle but it’s great if you like the high energy and mineral freshness – as I do!

2020 Viré-Clessé
From Viré – from Chateau Viré since 2009. Older vines and plenty of clay here. Try to harvest earlier here. 10-12 different parcels.
Fine and wide, with greener citrus purity. Hmm, here is a more considered depth of flavour but beautifully framed with a mouth-watering, and growing, intensity. Silky depth – that’s super.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé
In Vergisson, late-harvested here – bottled only a few days ago.
More of a white flower freshness. Really mouth-filling but not a wine of overt density – elegance, elegance, elegance – with a fine and very long finish. Simply excellent.
