Fabio on 2020:
For the 2020s, nothing is bottled yet. After 2021 everything would have better volumes; in 2020 we had 35 hl/ha and started picking 24 August. The flowering wasn’t great as there was some coulure – but we had no frost or hail – we had a bit of both in 2019! We liked the grapes at harvest – not too much alcohol – it reminds me, a little, of 2018 but with finishing pHs of about 3.2-3.25 and more structural in style than than the rounder 2019s

The wines…

As always, there’s a top wine from Birbettes which is worth a special search – but the rest are really worthy wines at their price-points too – well done here!

2020 Bourgogne
Planted a small parcel next to the Clos – Mâcon-Villages – and use these young grapes and include some end of press juice from the Pouilly when pressing to make this Bourgogne. It’s a very small cuvée, probably to be bottled before the end of the year.
Bright, pure – crystalline nose. Big in the mouth, but lovely mouth-watering energy too, finishing really well.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Varambon
All the vines around the house except the VV Birbettes. 15-50-year-old vines, racked end of August, bottling in April, probably.
More width of aroma here. Cleaner, an almost steely mineral width but with just enough cushion and mouth-watering sweetness to balance. Lovely…

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Pierre Folle
Here granitic soil, deeper soil, close to the house, next to the Clos – officially in Vers Chenes
A welcoming freshness again – faintly lemon-yellow fruited. Fuller but fresher – more mouth-watering too – I like the slightly more structural style of the previous a little more but this finishes with quite some class.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Birbettes
Here with the limestone of the clos but the oldest vines too – 60-70-years-old.
Higher toned, with more flowers in this perfume. More direct, very mineral, super, melting, flavour with a zesty style to the fruit. This is absolutely my style of wine – bravo!
