Olivier Giroux on 2020:
2020 reminds me of 2018 – it’s clearly a sunny year but we still have some classic style in the wines – and the lengths are lovely. Luckily, there’s some volume too – 55 hl/ha

All corks are tested for TCA before use. Olivier has been testing with DIAM since his 2017s but it’s still too early to change.

The wines…

Olivier has a range of truly delicious wines from 2020 – and there’s some volume too – so they shouldn’t be too hard to find.

2020 Mâcon-Fuissé En Vers Chânes
Ooh – that’s very perfumed – really impressively so. Wide, mineral, a little twist of the green citrus. That’s very lovely – such an excellent wine to start with.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Pierrotes
About 75 yo vines here. Bought in 2007 and Olivier says that he’s still working hard to have the life return to the soil. This will be bottled in 3 weeks.
Nice nose – there’s width, with a hint of salinity too. Lovey texture over the palate – a wine to cuddle up with – not the fully open expression of many but just so elegant and delicious with a twist of finishing citrus skin. Yum!

2020 Pouilly-Loché Les Mûres
This is the other side of the ‘fault’ on more limestone.
A little more structural and citrus, this nose. Bigger in the mouth, lots of growing intensity – purity and downright juicy finishing. Love this – so clean and wide finishing too.

2019 Pouilly-Loché En Chantone
1910 vines, 0.7 ha here. 30% of the elevage was done in 300-l stainless-steel ‘barrels’
A more composed nose. More airy but also more mineral – this is very mouth-watering. Long and very satisfying wine.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos des Rocs
3 ha monopole, an old quarry. 6-8 months in ss before bottling after barrel elevage. The bottling is planned for June – at this stage, it’s not seen any sulfur
A lovely vibration of aroma. The hypothetical blend of the last two, fine texture, very lovely and pure citrus finishing. This is still in elevage but already excellent, maybe the chance to be great!

2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos des Rocs
Bottled, just a small addition of sulfur beforehand.
A fuller nose, yellow fruited again. Ooh – that’s a very impressive 19 – intense, mouth-watering, beautifully textured – I tend to prefer the style of the 2020s but this is really top without overexaggerating the fruit and the shape. Simply an excellent wine.
