Gauthier on 2019:
40% less in 2019, though love the quality. It reminds me of 2012 – the quantity is of-course disappointing, but with 11 nights below zero… We have lots of tension and energy – the concentration of the grapes did the same for the acidity too.

Gauthier on 2018:
2018 was wetter in the spring so much more complicated than in 2017, we some worry about mildew, but we both started and finished well with a good harvest of good quality. Unfortunately before the harvest – 4 July – had a hit from the hail – not so much a hit in quantity, but wasn’t good for the plants, tiring them some. Our harvest started 01-05 September, then a pause, then again between 10-16 Sept – so two small campaigns for the harvest. We had to wait for phenolic maturity, the sugar was already there. I think that the 2017s are a little more austere the 2018s more exuberant…

The wines….

Good wines here and I particularly enjoyed the 2019 Quintaine…

The domaine bottles with DIAM for the UK importer, Wine Society, the rest is with cork.

2018 Quintaine
A faintly spiced core of cushioned yellow fruit. Big – fresh – a wave of mineral flavour – really a concentrated wine. The finish is different in style to many of the younger wines tasted today – more complex but less satisfyingly pure – Still, all told, that’s an excellent 2018.

2019 Quintaine
Here’s a more noticeable freshness yet still a depth of concentrated yellow fruit below – I see a little more purity to ths fruit vs the 18. Clean, fresh, layered – it’s the purity that I like here vs the 18 – that’s a super wine!

2019 Retour a la Terre
This with jar (amphora) elevage.
This nose is a little timid but I can see the pure fruit. Fully mineral and quite energetic – great finishing, chiselled and pure – a great finish – the rest of the wine just needs to catch up…

2019 Une Boulle
24 months sur-lattes
Not the typical mirabelles of many crémant here’s a proper fruit of purity – like some places more north in France. Rather sweet for me – but the width and easy flavour are certainly attractive. If you love sweet you’re going to really love this!
