As usual, a complex collection of domaines here – it is Domaine Thevenet, but with no wines under that label; the vines on the white marl soils taking the Domaine de la Bongran label, and then there’s the 10 hectares of vines on limestone soil that take the label of Domaine Emilian Gillet – the name taken from an ancestor of the family Thevenet.

Gautier on 2019:
This is the latest vintage for us and we will only start sales from next year. We had a small amount of hail & frost but in the end good sun and a decent volume harvest – it’s a vintage that pleases me. A very long, low-temperature vinification helped to bring out the best of this vintage for me.

The wines…

I could happily drink the ‘Gillet’ wine today, but the ‘Bognran’ has a different constitution – it is made for drinking closer to its 10th birthday – I will be fascinated to try it again with the proper maturity it deserves to achieve.

2019 Domaine Emilian Gillet, Viré-Clessé Quintaine
A narrow nose but showing lots of depth and there’s clarity to this ripe yellow citrus. Really concentrated – growing wider over the palate – sweet and mouth-watering. Structural but this structure is submerged below the layers of fruit. Big wine for keeping – I’d guess at least 5 years. There’s super length here…

2017 Domaine de Bongran, Viré-Clessé Quintaine Cuvée EJ Thevenet
‘Another complicated vintage but we had great maturity’
Here’s a very different nose, accented with perfumed herbs. Wow – depth and complexity to this wine – herbed like the nose – and certainly very ripe at the core – but despite extra, extra – there’s seemingly never too much. Relaxing over the palate, rather silky-textured, long. Great finishing. Not for drinking now, I’d give this at least 5 years too – it could be great.
