Raphäel on 2019:
It was a little difficult in the vines – I had some frost in my white – it was carnage! But for the domaine as a whole, I averaged 35 hl/ha in the reds at the bottom of the hills, and nearer to 45 hl/ha for the rest. It was hot too, but not too hot! There was the peak of heat but it didn’t last long and overall I found the heat of 2019 was less ‘violent’ than we had in 2018.

The wines…

All of the unbottled crus were excellent but not showing their best as the cuverie was so cold – but some brilliant wines among the others – which I bought!

2020 Beaujolais Nouveau
“I find 20 difficult to compare to other vintages – it could be a bit like 18 but with more of the finesse of 19.”
Plenty of colour. Aromas that are starting deep then widening with air. That’s becoming quite lovely – certainly it’s a concentrated nose. Mineral and direct but with such a fruity depth and cossetting texture. Completely delicious – great BVN – really finishing with a burst of mineral flavour!

2019 Beaujolais Villages Blanc de Lantignié
A nicely deep nose with a little lime zest – mineral too. Mouth-filling, the shape and mouth-watering style are good, and there’s minerality with plenty of lime complexity – not much rigour to the flavour. That’s very good and shows a nice tension.

2019 Beaujolais Funambule
The no sulfur cuvée of declassified BJV
The nose starts small but pure. Lovely depth and texture to this wine – purity, a touch of salinity too. Quite sweet fruit but with a fine juicy aspect that balances it really well – bravo – just so delicious.
2019 Beaujolais-Lantignié La Savoye
A nice colour. That’s got a lovely perfume to the nose – ripe red fruited but never in excess. Nice drive here – a bit more direct, slightly structural, but with layers of part fruit, part mineral flavour. Great finishing – intense but never too much. That’s a great Lantignié.

None of the following are bottled – they were sampled from tank and from large-format barrels:

2019 Regnié La Ronze
Here’s a nicely vibrant nose – darker fruit. Darker fruit in the mouth too – mouth-watering with a fine structure. Clearly less ready but great shape and fine purity – That’s a super wine and with a strong and wide finish.

2019 Régnié Les Braves
‘A nice south exposure.’
Deeper, darker, riper fruit but of equal energy. More direct and more structured the tannin framing this wine, no grain but with a little dryness today. But wide pure, slightly floral-violet accented fruit. Super finishing – that’s very attractive.

2019 Morgon Les Charmes
More width to the aromatic here – a little floral cushioning to redder fruit. Extra attack – structure but less dryness – the energy and a small touch of sucrosity blend together well to give this an airy style despite plenty of material. For keeping a little while – but only a little because it’s so delicious!

2019 Gaia
Gamaret 70%, gamay for the rest.
What an impressive nose – deeper, differently shaped too – clearly with plenty of florals. Concentrated – really silky width – this caresses the palate. Slowly lingering with a beautiful diminuendo of flavour.
