Last year, I tasted with Antione at his brother’s place in Avenas – here is an all-new ball-game. With a view towards the church of Régnié the house effectively has vines in the garden – a little over 1 ha when he first came, and now it’s 2.5 hectares – like his own personal Clos. The domaine is 5.5-hectares in total of which 1.2 is in Morgon, Grand Cras.
Antoine on 2019:
“2019 didn’t bring many complications – I managed to make almost 40 hl/ha. It’s a lighter vintage but one that I like a lot. I start my fermentations cooler – not 10°C, or lower, like some – but 20-22° – which is generally a lot lower than our recent harvest temperatures. I’m now using about 50:50 tank and barrel elevage. We’ve got more acidity in our 2019s than in 2018 and I like the energy.”
The wines…
A super range of wines – I bought a mixed case!
2019 Régnié
An assembly of parcels. Terroirs that are part alluvial, part more sand. Vinified like the Morgon.
Here’s an interesting nose – starting with almost a small accent of rosemary to the fresh red fruit. Open, very tasty a little structure but not harsh – keep this another 6-12 months but that’s excellent.
This has been an organic plot for about 15 years – all old vines
Fresh but it’s a deeper nose – growing in interest with air. Hmm, lovely open, vibrantly delicious wine. Bravo – easy!
This a cuvée since 2018 – this was previously in the last wine – a parcel name. A windy area. A little longer cuvaison and in this vintage 10 months of elevage.
A touch more colour. Cold it’s tight but with aeration, this starts to open and has a lovely perfume. Round, supple yet so fresh – here is a great selection of wines in 2019 – energy and depth of flavour in the finish. Another great wine and you could even drink this a bit before the Morgon.
