Gilles on 2019:
19 was quite an easy vintage here – I made only 4 treatments. I wasn’t that convinced after the harvest though, the colours weren’t great and I didn’t think a lot of material – how wrong could I be – it’s turned out to be really superb. On the other hand, there’s quite a bit less. I didn’t think I’d been frosted but obviously, there was an effect as my yields dropped – somewhere about 40 hl/ha – which is higher than in 2020 where some parts had almost no rain so 17 hl/ha in Brouilly vs 56 in St.Amour – I only had 45 hl/ha in 2018. Fortunately, I’m more fixated on my wines rather than the yields!

Gilles work in the vines has Terravitis certification since the 2018 vintage.

The wines…

Excellent or even better – I’m getting into the habit of saying that here – another very good vintage at this estate.

All in DIAM now and I’m very happy – two wines are bottled from 2019, the rest remain in tank for now…

2019 Brouilly Saburin
14 days of maceration here – ‘Maybe a little more in 2019 as it’s so supple.’
Quite airy and a little floral, red-fruited. Plenty of volume in the mouth – wide, a touch of tannic texture long finishing with some modest bitters. Tasty at the end!

2019 Fleurie La Madone
The 2nd vintage at the domaine, and certified Terrvitis.
That’s a deeper nose and of more concentrated and darker fruit. More concentrated in the mouth too – but with plenty of structure – rounded by the extra concentration of fruit. Some mouth-perfume of flowers too. Lovely finishing intensity – some bitters again here but here’s a delicious wine that will improve with time – the style is for keeping a little.

2019 Morgon
Plenty of colour. A deeper, darker fruit of freshness and an impression of silk. Mouth-filling, lovely freshness – that’s the most complete of these wines so far – it’s really excellent.

From tank:

2019 Regnié Le Chastys
That’s a really impressively floral nose – a super invitation. Supple, concentrated, that’s another excellent wine – complete wine – of intensity and freshness but with plenty of depth of flavour – really super. A finish that’s full of violets. A great Regnié

2019 Fleurie Les Roches
There was no 2017 due to the hail
Also very floral but completely different to the Regnié – a mineral aspect to this nose too. More driving and with more freshness – touched by the structure and a modest tannin at this stage of elevage – but this clearly needs time. A great finish though – so good – sweeping fresh lines – when will you bottle? ‘Probably when the 18 is finished – maybe in June.

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
