Pauline on 2019:
“2019 was not too complicated, also no frost so it was relatively easy – and the wines are good! It’s a year with freshness with some finesse in the wines – they are a bit less solar. Whilst we had no frost we did have a little oïdium – it’s rare here on the hills – so the volume was down a bit but not too much. We still averaged 40 hl/ha.”
The wines…
A fine range from Pauline – I even bouught some!
2019 Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre
The major cuvée here, vines around the domaine 3.5 ha, decomposed granite, sandy soils but quite deep.
Hmm, that’s a lovely perfumed nose, with ripe red fruit – that’s really lovely. Wide and fresh, there’s a concentration and a lovely line of direction and minerality. That’s a super wine – one that I’d wait for a little but super, super!
Also from Gross Pierre but here about 2 ha worth and the older vines of the domaine – an average of about 80-years-old. Vinification and elevage the same as the previous.
Also perfumed but here a little more vibrant and also touched with some salinity – the next sniff and this has opened with fabulous dimensions. A little more depth to this fruit flavour, a very slight extra cushion too. A similar drive to the last wine but with just a touch more sucrosity – you hardly need to wait for this one. That’s a great Chrioubles.
2019 Chiroubles Au Cras
At 460 m – another lieu-dit. This the last bottling, done just 3 weeks ago. From the high part of Chiroubles over 150m higher than the Grosse Pierre vines but directly south-facing. Much closer to the mother rock here.
A more red-fruited, almost calmer nose – a very faint suggestion of pyrazine. Wide, it’s a more mineral width too. Higher tones in this flavour profile – yes a little pyrazine but adding complexity.
2019 Fleurie Bel Air
Half a hectare here, close to the limit of Chiroubles – the soil very granite rose.
A deeper nose – perfumed and rather floral, more red-fruited. Mouth-filling – there’s a lovely energy here – an open clarity of flavour too. Easy red-fruited and tasty – the best part is the wonderful nose.
