Nicholas on recent vintages:
“2023 – We’re happy! And we were surprised with the quality – we had maldies and hail but still great volumes – there could have been more acidity and the sugars were long to finish – a little like 2015. 2022 a little less volume but is still looking good – but another with lower acidity and some higher degrees – so let’s see.”
This is a domaine that has a long elevage so we always taste older vintages, ones that reflect what is currently ‘commercial’ for them. As always, wines made with no added sulfur – also not for bottling.
The wines…
Very good 2020s – but great 2021s !!
2020 St.Véran Les Pommards
0.50 ha – about 45 yo vines – December 22 bottling.
Hmm – a nicely direct and focused fruit energy. Hmm – direct, very ‘together’ then broading with complexity – mouth-watering and saline in this pretty finish.
2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles-Vignes La Croix
Atypical – 70-year-old but with blue schist in the soil – 23 months of elevage, 75% of that elevage in various sizes of wood – plus some concrete egg.
Good width and aromatic attack. Really complex, lots of herb included – finishing deliciously and with a mouthwatering style – really delicious!
2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles-Vignes La Croix
32 months of elevage…
Good fresh attack again – mineral and citrus – despite what Nicholas says about the acidity. Hmm – fuller and riper, but still open with an airy style to the complex flavours – intense with a bit of green fruit included.
‘Cold and late versus what we’ve become accustomed to. 3 weeks of difference in ripeness between these two assembled parcels. This is our most important cuvée – 50% of our production here.’
A small aromatic cushion – lots of yellow fruit. Incisive, direct, delicious flavour – sherbet energy and complexity. That’s a great wine !!
An assembly of all but the 1er cru parcels – ‘It will be bottled soon but is reductive. It’s always a bad sign if we make this wine – it means we didn’t have enough grapes!’
A deep nose due to the reduction – but it’s not too bad. Wow in the mouth – what intensity and what almost sour acidity but it’s the type that keeps you coming back for more – I’d carafe this for sure but it’s a wonderful ride – potentially bravo for the acid lovers!
