Nicolas on his recent vintages:
In 2023 we had no hail but we had a lot of mildew – despite that I couldn’t believe how much we harvested! Let’s see what comes after the elevage. 2022 delivered much less juice – 180kg of grapes to make 100 litres in some places – they were like myrtilles! But all are bottled and of course 21s are sold out:

The wines…

Always a lovely range from Nicolas – the red is a standout !!

2022 Mâcon-Verzé
Young vines 2002-2017. All the young vines and all tank elevage.
Almost a Chablis style ‘iodé’ nose to this – in the mouth it’s textured, indeed faintly cushioned and generous but still with a decent spine of energy. The finish is nicely long too… Lovely!

2022 St.Veran La Boisserole
50% barrel and 50% tank elevage.
Large scale with good freshness – that’s an inviting wine. Hmm, cooler and more direct – less padding and here’s a slightly fluid, mobile quality – this is a very lovely wine – silky and with a little burst of finishing flavour – delicious.

2022 Mâcon-Verzé Le Bien Heureux
The old-vine cuvée – on altitude so less affected by the dryness. Bottled 3 weeks – all barrel including a couple of larger formats.
Broad with a nicely complex citrus – plenty of green citrus here. Round, supple – rather complex – slowly mouth-watering – a more contemplative wine – so despite the extra concentration it’s a wine that finds it hard to follow the energy of the previous cuvées – though it’s only just been bottled and it’s long though, that’s for sure.

2022 Mâcon-Verzé Rouge
Gamay from the mid-1970s, concrete tanks with 50% whole clusters. Elevage with 50% barrel, the rest tank.
A perfumed width of aroma – really inviting. Hmm, great scale and tons of freshness – this is a delicious wine full of characterful energy – juicy finishing too – a finish that haunts – yes – simply excellent! Maybe a great red Macon!
