Max on the recent vintages:
“I’ve been here at the domaine since 2018 but I also harvested in 2016, working in cuverie since 2020. I’m really happy with this year’s harvest and it vinified well too. We had roughly similar volume in 2022 when we were lucky that the storms largely bypassed us – there was a bit of oïdium to contend with but only that…”
The wines…
Is there ever a vintage where Julien doesn’t make some great wines?
2022 Mâcon-Cruzille Au Quin Château
Here in the domaine since 2018 – was worked ‘conventionally’ for 30 years – now certified biodynamic since the 2023 vintage. Soil similar to in the Jura we think.
Broad, saline and quite exciting aroma. Hmm. There’s depth here but carried with fine energy that’s balanced with some vintage sweetness. There’s a bit of barrel in the elevage but I don’t taste any – easy finishing – just a delicious wine, sneakily long too.
Les reds:
Really aromatic, it’s a layered vinification of destemmed grapes and whole clusters – very perfumed. A hint of gas but juicy, joyous flavour. Vin dangereux – ooh that’s too good! Bravo!
Again 2 years of elevage. Planted in the 1950s a type of gamay called ‘petit-grain’, planted by Julien’s grandfather.
More concentrated but finely delineated aromas – almost a menthol/bouquet-garni complexity too. Large-scaled, complex, a very faint drag to the texture from the tannin. Concentrated but balanced with its juicy finish. A great version of this wine!
