I kept the photo from last year as Emanuel wasn’t in great shape since breaking his back in a fall !!
Emmanuel on 2023 & 2022:
“We are happy and with a full cellar for the first time in 10 years. 2022 was less volume and the heatwave was earlier – in July – so the alcohol levels got a little blocked – we have some wines with 11.5° so didn’t chaptalise – it was anyway a hot vintage and I think it would have been a mistake for the balance of the wines. In 2022 it was the vines with the biggest rendenements that were the most balanced – the opposite of what we saw in 2020. We were finishing harvesting at midday in 2023 as it was just too hot to continue not just for the grapes – the pickers too!”
The wines…
The 2022s showing very well from this mix of vintages – my main wishes are for a speedy recover for Emanuel!
All the following are bottled:
2022 Mâcon-Chardonnay En Serre
‘A new wine – the domaine of this guy learned with our father so everything was like by us.’
Fresh, direct, detailed – not sweet. Hmm – the freshness and balance is really lovely here – complex, ripe but almost a suggestion of acidiulated finishing flavour it’s delicious and only 11.5% – ‘it was 14° in 2023 where it went from 10 to 14 in a week !!‘ A beautiful wine.
2022 Mâcon-Cruzille Les Genèvrières
Good breadth of vibrant aroma – coated with a veneer of barrel. Direct, cool, gorgeous in the mouth – for the first few moments I’m captivated by this before the oak starts to show itself. Still a wonderful wine but wait 3+ years for the barrel. Really large-scaled finishing…
We lost 50% in this vintage – this is one of the few that survived enough to make the cuvée
Still plenty of barrel but also with a crackle of energy. Cool but quite broad – a mm or two of cushioning. A wiry mineral width in the middle to finishing flavours, here with a small accent of salinity too. Really exploding over the palate into this über-delicious finish – give at 2-3 years in the cellar if you can find some – it could be great!!
Les Reds:
2021 Bourgogne Les Renardières
First time destemmed 100% and debourbed too as the vintage wasn’t hyper-clean. A selection of some great domaines in the Côte d’Or – massale pinot here – still relatively young
An almost musky, fine, complex nose – that’s a great invitation. Nicely structured but there’s depth to this flavour – also with florals – too. Another wine that instantly fills the gap after you swallow with a burst of finishing flavour. Lovely wine with 2 years worth of structure to wait for.
2021 Mâcon-Cruzille Beaumonts
Again the first time destemmed from here.
Silky, high-tone – a suggestion of gentian(?) in this floral perfume. Yes a bit of gentian but it’s adding high-toned energy to this floral-led perfume. Concentrated in this finishing width. Hmm – a lovely, moreish, finish here!
2020 Bourgogne La Myotte
A rounder nose this time with some spice accents. Mouth-filling, so concentrated – impressive but at the same time almost oppressive – some chocolate-style to this complexity. It could be a great one – but you will need patience – keep this back at least 5 years for the structure and another 5 years for the real onset of maturity.
